Image metadata to improve SEO?

The company that I work for recently went to a online marketing seminar telling them to update all their image metadata.

I was looking at updating the title, subject, author and keywords under each image property summary and keeping it all relevant, not flooding it will keywords as I rather use 'white hat SEO'.

Now having 1929 product photos, I was wondering if we went through the metadata for each image and updated the summery information would this help with SEO ranking?

The main thing that helps rank images is the image alt-text.

A couple of other things are:
    • Surrounding the image with plain text (ex: keyword-1 image-alt-text keyword-2).
    • Internal keyword anchor-text links pointing at an image.

So you wouldn't bother changing image metadata under the properties as well as adding alt-text?
eg. title, subject, author and keywords

Image data/metadata has very little impact on ranking, it will have a significant impact on ranking in Google Images but not much if any in regular search. I have conducted correlation research that backs this up (see: theopenalgorithm.com).

The ROI on other types of SEO (link building + writing great content) is much higher than on doing this kind of SEO work.
