I local business called me today about their website and said they have to redo the site because it had an attack or something. After searching it looks like they are completely de-indexed in Google. Could this be due to malware and if so is there a way to restore it?

  • Letsurf,

The actions Google takes against site that have been infected by malware can vary. At the very least a listing in SERP’s will be marked with a warning but they can potentially de-index listings to protect users.

The best course of action the company can take is to clean up all malware suspected to be on the site and then request a review from Google.

Add the site to your Google Webmaster Tools account then go to the Malware page. If Google detected malware on the site and that's the reason it was delisted, it'll tell you there, and you should be able to request reinclusion too.

Thanks for the advice. So what are the chances that the site will be re-indexed? It is even possible or should I just recommend they changes domain and start over?

You can get the site re-listed if it was malware.

Is there a difference between submitting a site for review (because of malware) or submitting the site for reconsideration because of a webmaster guideline penalty? I think these are two different things and was wondering if submitting to get re-indexed because of malware has a better success rate than reconsideration because of poor seo practices. I've heard getting a site re-indexed after an seo penalty doesn't happen.
