Hello Warriors,

I'm trying to register a domain for an authority site in the health and fitness niche.

From the recent Google update, EMD (Exact Match Domains) for ranking is a thing of the past. However, does that imply that one can register any domain not necessarily minding the keyword for SEO but rather aiming to rank the inner pages only?

My advice would be to purchase your domain and test.

If you're really unsure, go ahead and get a separate hosting account and test to see how effective it is.

Google algorithms change by the second. Any answer someone gives you on here is pure guess work. Go ahead and test it out for yourself. Only then will you if this will work for your niche, domain, IP address and backlink strategy!

I read comments on these forums all day long. Then go away and test the theory for myself.

    Hope that helps?

Exact match domains are still valuable when building websites. They might not have the same effect that the did before the Google update, but they are still useful for website creation.

If you go for an authority site, post at least 25+ lenghy articles (750+ words for each).. IMO , using EMD's with very few articles are gone with latest google update.

The new algorithm which Google recently released has ensured that EMD's are not as important as they once where. I even read an article which said that very specific EMD's might even be punished by Google. Be very careful.

Don't afraid from EMD just only pursue white hat seo practices.

I believed that it does not matter whether your domain is EMD or not as long as your contents are quality and you treat your site as a blog. Not Just create and leave site. Also it is important that you create quality backlinks to your site. Create Fanpage, Youtube, Twitter, Pinterest and any social media sites. Update them every time you are posting new articles in your website.

After the updates its not advisable thing to do, you should go for the brand name rather than domain name in the URL so that in future your website will be safe.

I would try and go for a brand name and build your website and domain name around that if you are going to go for an exact match domain I would use your brand and then possibly one keyword relating to your most popular service you are offering

As the name portrays, EMD never refers to sites with search terms in their domain name, in turn makes these sites rank high. EMD targets on domains with poor content and exactly match the search terms they hope to be searched for. For example, online-pet-accessories-shop.com. Just a generic search term this domain contains, with no brand recognition and quality content available. Such domains contain no content and if present, copied from other websites.

Just as Panda and Penguin updates that are being refreshed, EMD also will get a refresh from now on.

    Recovery tips

Create high quality content to your affected site
Mail a re-consideration request to the Google Webmaster Team if you think your website was mistakenly hit (as usual)
    Increase your social presence
Change the overall design and re-cover your website
De-index all low quality URLs that should have caught Google’s attention
    Convert quantity into quality
Check analytics every time a new effort is done
Create a strong brand presence and exposure, rather clinging to generic names in order to drive traffic

EMD still works but the value is lower than before, the best thing to do is keep adding quality contents and minimize overwhelming on-page seo. You can read more on adsenseflippers how these guys handle the EMD update. The best thing to know is just try and build it, you will find the reality by testing and do action.

I actually have a client who has an EMD that got slightly hit by the update. Rankings are still there with some keywords doing okay and others not. He is okay with his current rankings but wants to get away from the EMD in case there's another update and to improve his branding.

We have been thinking that a branded domain with his business name in it may improve his CTR on Google as well.

What's the best way to approach this? Should he change his domain outlined here?

And does he just park the new domain at his host? We do not want to build a new website as it is current, updated and has great content.

If the EMDs are not going to provide any benefit then there should not be any harm at all. You can try any other name too but prefer to get a name that can reflect the purpose/niche of your site rather than any random/irrelevant name.

The google update is not that serious. The google update just means that exact match domain names aren't going to weigh as heavy when deciding the rank of your site. that's all it means, nothing less, nothing more.

My advice: If you find a exact domain name, go with it.
