Is he accurate, or trying to throw SEO folks off the scent..

I specifically liked:
...don't dismiss directories completely. I have heard people talking about directories being altogether bad and advise people to avoid them. This is not the case, good quality, moderated directories, or niche directories are still worth looking in to.

This was already discussed a few days ago when it was current, SEO is a 24/7 business and it is critical to success for those in it to be up to date.

You say this a lot mate... How about just directing him to the other thread instead of stating the obvious over and over?

Sorry guys! Forgot to look this up on WF because it was was in my Google Reader and looked new (but was a bit old). I just tried to find the other post here in WF but unable to find it.

Maybe if somebody has the link to the thread they can post it.

To answer your question, yes directories work very well. However, I pretty much only use paid directories. It keeps the IM'ers away. Most of them wouldn't dream of having a $500-1000 budget just for directories.

For local SEO I'll use free directories like Google+ for Business, Yelp, MerchantCircle, etc.

Honestly, I agree on what he said. Not all web directories are bad like for example Dmoz.

A directory worth getting into is one that you simply CAN'T get into but are naturally added to like dmoz.
