If yes, what is your process of building
backlinks manually and quickly to rank for long tail keyword
phrases?

Buying link building tools right now is not in my budget!

    you can but it will take longer, automation tools just speed up the process for you.
    some people use them wrongly and get penalized but others just use the same strategy as they would building by hand and just let the tool automate it.

    If you're going to be building links manually I'd recommend you do things that automation just can't do.

    For example, focus your efforts on high quality guest blogging which will not only give you SEO benefit but also direct traffic.

    Another good idea is to hang out on Q&A sites to answer questions relevant to your niche. You can set stuff like this up through Google alerts.

    There are tons of things you can do but essentially you need to have a good end product and user experience on your website when the visitors get there.
