Hey does anyone know of any free SEO tools that will let me know my progress concerning my linking strategy? For example, one that could display number of backlinks to my site.

  For tracking the backlinks pointing to your site, you can use Backlink Watch. Most paid tools include a free trial. You can try the free version of Traffic Travis, SEOmoz, and Raven Tools.
