Still creating good content? Don't waste your time. Create terrible content for the best SEO results

Creating good content is something that takes a lot of time and effort. But it may or may not give you the results that you're looking for...

Why waste time creating good content when you can get even better marketing results by creating terrible content?

01. The advantages of creating terrible content:

01. It gets talked about. Everywhere. Really.
02. It's a lot quicker and easier than creating good content.
03. It can earn you a ton of income, universal fame and prestige.
04. Did I mention the millions of autopilot backlinks you get?

02. Examples of terrible content that have spread worldwide and gained the benefits above:

03. The Key is...

You need to create terrible content. Super terrible content. Content that is just bad is not enough. It has to be TERRIBLE.

Same with good content. It won't benefit you much. No one cares about good. People want GREAT.

If you want to get amazing results, you either need to create super terrible content or super great content. It's one extreme or the other...

Did you find this post to be super terrible or super great?

Thing is that creating 'good' rubbish is as creative and as hard as creating genuinely good content.

Rebecca Black was not an accident.

It'd be wrong to say that one can simply whack up any old tosh and expect it to attain one's goals, whatever those goals might be.

That's what I was going to say. This is NOT "terrible" content. Most of it that goes viral is very creative. Cute girls always draw an audience.

So you're saying that creating something like this...

      - Nearly 200 million YouTube views total
      - Literally created over a period of a few days

... is as creative and hard as creating something like this:

      - Only nearly 40 million YouTube views
      - Created over the course of several months with trial and error beyond imagination

I'm not saying that you're wrong... I just don't see how that's possible.

Well, of course, I agree that it was not an accident...

You don't create a music video that...
      - is full of auto-syncing
      - has lyrics like: "Yesterday was Thursday, Today is Friday, Tomorrow is Saturday, and Sunday comes afterwards"

And expect it to win you an MTV award. Now that would be an accident...

Getting almost universally negative reviews and becoming the most disliked YouTube video, with over 3 million negative votes is probably what you would expect given what was put into it...

I get where your coming from. People seem to feed on negativity and confrontation so your suggesting this as content to supply traffic.

You will have to remember to be careful though when creating some controversial content as anything seems to be considered racist or an attack on someone these day.

Look at Facebook. All these sick fanpages about "I love cancer" etc seems to get tens of thousands of views even though its disgusting.

Do one about a hero and people just pass it over. Strange world!!!

      Just be careful

I'd hate to suggest a famed marketer got it wrong or missed the point but here goes.

This is not about good or bad. As I noted upthread, I hope, the Rebecca Black thing was very good. It was not an accident. If it had not been her the same formula would have been applied to more kids until one hit the mark.

There's really only two ways that one can gain an audience, be a leader, be a boss, gain authority - all of the foregoing are, in the end about leadership.

    Here's the secret two ways:
    1) Leadership through knowledge
    2) Leadership through emotion

Most of us when writing our content focus upon knowledge but only a part of the population responds to objective 'facts'. Most people do not think and react to emotion.

When we look at the two examples above we are not really looking at either in an objective manner, we are forced to react in an emotional manner. That's what took the biscuit here.

The thing is that some people are better than others at dealing in emotional terms, the people behind Rebecca Black knew how to approach our emotional, visceral responses, be they negative or positive. The quality of her 'singing' was a part of the provocation of that response.

The skill levels required to get emotional responses and fact led ones are the same, but the skill sets are different.

Some people can write good link bait, which is almost always emotionally led, and some can not. I can not. My first line above was designed to bait the reader by provoking a response. I probably did it badly.

Exactly. There are a million videos on youtube of middle school girls singing badly, worse even than poor Rebecca. Most of them get zero views. Unless you really have the creativity to make something that is horrible and still entertaining, I suggest you stick with trying to create good content. It's a lot safer.

Good food for thought MM thanks.

Whatever kind of content you create for traffic generation via other sites, make sure you create unique, documented tracking links and monitor which ones actually work.

Just blasting endless content out there on other sites and never knowing which ones actually bring the traffic (and conversions of course) is beyond futility.

  • A few details about the Rebecca Black "Friday" video above for those of you who are unfamiliar with it...

    - The video was removed from YouTube on June 16, 2011. It had already amassed more than 167 million views, and had over 3.1 million "dislikes" (87% of total ratings) from YouTube users. The video was uploaded to YouTube again on September 16, 2011.

    - Rebecca Black's mother, Georgina Kelly, paid Ark Music $4,000 for the production of the song. Black's family could have paid nothing in exchange for giving up all rights to the song.

    - Ark Music extensively used the pitch-correcting software Auto-Tune. Although Kelly had some doubts over the quality of the lyrics, Rebecca assured her that "I sang it as they wrote it, Mom."

    - "Friday" co-writer Patrice Wilson explained that "I wrote the lyrics on a Thursday night going into a Friday. I was writing different songs all night and was like, 'Wow, I've been up a long time and it's Friday.' And I was like, wow, it is Friday!"

    - The song has received almost universally negative reviews. Lyndsey Parker of Yahoo! Music asked if it could be "the worst song ever."

    - On March 29, 2011, it surpassed Justin Bieber's "Baby" as the most disliked YouTube video, with 1.19 million negative votes, and once had over 3 million "dislikes", accounting for 87% of the total ratings of the video.

    - After reading the harsh reviews of "Friday", Black said that "those hurtful comments really shocked me." Ark Music offered to take the video down from YouTube, but Black refused the offer, saying that she did not wish "to give the haters the satisfaction that they got me so bad I gave up."

    - The song entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 72 and rose to 58 the next week.

    - The ownership of "Friday" is unclear. In a March 29, 2011 letter from Kelly's lawyer to Ark Music, she alleged that Ark Music failed to fulfill the terms of their November 2010 agreement by not giving her the song and video's master recordings; claimed Black as exclusively signed to the label; and exploited the song without permission by, for example, selling a "Friday" ringtone. While Wilson stated that Kelly "will get the masters and the song. They can have it all" and agreed that Black was not exclusive to Ark, his attorney claimed that Ark owns the copyright for the song and the November agreement is invalid.

Content doesn't have to super great or super crap, content has to serve a purpose. Your examples serve a purpose, the cat video is amusement, some folks are easy to impress. I'm sure most of those cat video views are teenagers that laugh when they fart. Still the video served a purpose (a quick laugh).

For me, I deliver hobby/small business content to a targeted niche, It pays the bills. You don't have to have viral content to make decent money online, think long term.

The average person will never have anything go viral on the net, just not going to happen, IMO it's a waste of time to even think it's possible to go viral. If you have content go viral, fine, but the odds are it will never happen.

Your better off building something that is useful instead of a pile of crap site/content that dreams of going big some day.

Yokon, going viral is not that difficult. It needs perfect planning and some great marketing techniques. Sure it will not go viral on its own, you need to MAKE IT GO VIRAL, either HOOK or by CROOK..... got it?

No, I don't got it. 99.999999999999% of web content will never go viral. Doesn't matter If your trying to go viral or not, odds are against it ever happening.

Good content is in the eye of the beholder. Has nothing to
do with google thinking this or that.

Viral has varying degrees of sharing, if you will. Yukon's right.
Most stuff will not go viral, and that stuff that does, like Miss Black,
will be 15 minutes of fame.

When I talk about going viral, I mean viral in the sense that my stuff
gets passed on, a regular basis, to interested parties. That's a different
type of going viral than what this thread was about.

People who write articles are not looking for the same silly viral-ness
that goes with a cat video, although I wish I had just one, complete
          with adsense on it.

Real people, sharing my stuff, on a daily basis, is what I strive to do.

I am not looking to have a cat video, although I did envy that
"don't touch my junk" dude, and maybe that clown, "Don't tase
          me bro' "

It hasn't gone viral at all, but it's terrible :-)

Even when putting the different people in the top 10 I didn't make any choice based on their haircut, it looks all the same to me, just plain :-)

I remember a guy telling me, as a journalist one must try and write something controversial to get the attention from people. not terrible tho. i watch football and i follow a few newspapers. dailymail for an example is totally biased, now thats what i think but still i wont stop reading their articles. actually i'm eager to read the latest posts from adrian durham these days. i know he's gonna write something crap about chelsea following the draw last night but still its worth reading. and I think that happens everywhere. you either write something people would absolutely adore or something people would absolutely hate. these are the contents that usually go viral because people talk about it.

We have an example here in the WF as well. i love to read Mike Anthony, one of the senior members of this community's posts here. he either writes something people would love or something people would hate. that thread where he wrote "ADSENSE SUCKS", yeah i'm talking about that thread. he had an argument with yukon, paul and a lot of other warriors. but the thing is he got people to interact. the hate was so much that yuke had to come and explain why adsense doesnt suck. i mean not that hate towards mike but towards the post lol. that content definitely didnt go viral but i've seen a lot of articles like these trending. i still remember that "ADSENSE SUCKS" thread so it definitely made an impact.
