Advice needed for my website

Hello warriors,
I need advice for my website. Recently, I read a post that de-indexing categories and tags are good as they prevent post duplication. I am using Thesis Theme for wordpress, and I decided to de-index by categories by going to 'Site Options' in the panel. Since de-indexing the categories, my posts are getting indexed in Google. However, they're not appearing at the opening pages of search results. A news site that takes articles from mine is appearing on page number 1 for the same keywords. Was de-indexing categories a bad thing?
