If I were for example to create a financial article and within that article point to a finance related page at CNN money .... Would I gain any SEO or other benefit by creating a redirect link using my domain which points to the page on CNN Money?

Thanks in advance for any feedback you can provide...

    • By linking to relevant sites adds value when considering SEO.

You could link to CNN and link to your website somewhere else in the article - that would appear much more natural.

No, SEO juice is only passed one way. You linking to them would give them better SEO providing your site has good Page Rank.

Unless they link back to you, your just advertising them for free

Only that your article will have a chance to get crawled faster but still no guarantee here. Coz so many articles are being linked to CNN articles. But still Google will love your article.

    Why?

Because you are helping the readers to visit more authoritative site then yours. You are helping them to get a SOLUTION or REFERENCE that they are searching for. I am speaking from an experience and this is what I do employ in my strategies too. I link sometimes to wikipedia articles which are PR6 and above and my articles get good love from Google. Matt cutts always presses on providing more and more valid information to the users and your site or article will ultimately get good rankings and for longer duration.

Your site or article may not appear on top page of the Google but it will definitely increase its own rank gradually with time.

Remember, SEO is a gradual process and with time you see results. There are so many hypes that people can get ranked their article on top page in 15 minutes but what if you check it after a day, it is no longer there in next 10 pages. So to summarize, think about the readers and you'll definitely gain excellence.

    • Thanks for the informative answer, I appreciate that if I include the CNN link (or any link to an authority site) will help with my SEO, but the question really related to me creating a redirect, for example 'mydomain.com/interest_rates pointing to an interest rate page on an authority site, does that give my domain any more benefit?

Ooops, Sorry I overlooked the term "redirect".

As you may be aware there are so many types of re-directs and are used differently based on the situation.

In your case, mydomain.com/interest_rates pointing to an interest rate page on an authority site, will not give you any authority instead whatever authority is actually present for the page will get transferred to the CNN authority page within 2 weeks to 2 months depending on many factors, but the fact is you will lose your page authority.

Talking about SEO now. As your page is loosing authority, you will not gain anything in SEO too.

        Remember Redirecting = Transferring.

Will get more benefits from link exchange, where your website link must be on CNN as well as CNN link must be on your site.
