Do you really need secondary keywords?

We all agree that content is king. We believe equally in the efficacy of keywords. I mean primary keywords. What role do secondary keywords have in content management or content creation. At times I tend to think that they can totally be dispensed with. Am I wrong in my understanding of the power of secondary keywords?

Secondary keywords can narrow down and define what exactly you are talking about.
Having primary keywords is a good way to start but without secondary keywords one site might not go too far.
they are like back up bouncers

Someone said a secondary keyword is all about mixing the relevant keyword phrases. Hmm, it sounds good.

Other than giving you some targeted traffics it also help your site for variations. Do not focus on your target keywords only because it will really makes your ranking decrease for the reasons of excessive used of your target keyword as anchortext.

Absolutely. You want to hit as many relevant keywords as you can to your
content. Depending on just one can be suicide, especially if the keyword ...

      1. Isn't targeted enough
      2. Is super competitive.

Sometimes, long tail keywords give you your best results.

    Prasanth,

I wrote a blog about Matt Cutt's presentation on how Google Search works. In his presentation, he discussed how important secondary keywords are. These secondary keywords are also called LSI terms or LTKWs (Long-Tailed Keywords). In layman's terms, think of a 'best actor' for your primary keyword(s) and 'best support actors' for your secondary keywords. I don't want to post the link of our blog because others may think we're taking advantage of this discussion to attract visitors to our blog. We explained in our blog what Matt Cutts mentioned.

Here's the video presentation of Matt Cutts.
