There are a lot of threads these days asking questions like whether this SEO tool is white hat or black hat, or whether this link building method is white hat or black hat, or where one can find white hat SEO services...

However, often what is white hat and what is black hat differs in definition from person to person. And a lot of methods and tools end up along the so-called area of the "grey hat".

Which types of tools, link building methods, SEO techniques etc. do you consider to be white hat, and which do you consider to be black hat?

My thoughts...

White Hat:
- Creating great content
- Automated link building
- Link Building Networks
- Spinning and Automated Submissions

Black Hat:
- Hacking websites to get backlinks
- Invisible, hidden content on pages
- Threatening webmasters at gunpoint in order to get backlinks
- Mass comment spamming

And you?

Every link building method on the planet is on Google's black list, mate.

Doesn't matter whether it's manual or automatic. Google hates them all.

That's why you can't just white and black hat by Google's standards. Everyone has their own definition of what white or black hat is.

100% correct. Hate to break it to the OP, but ANY form of manual link building is technically not considered white-hat.

Link building networks could be considered black hat as well, since Google starts to de-indexed network like Build My Rank.

Every link counts as black-hat, Google don't want you to build backlinks at all. They want you to get viral links that people are willingly placing/referring others to your site. Who the heck in this world is going to do that? Just in case your contents are interesting enough and people can't stop themselves to share that with their friends. Only that way you can obtain those links....

In your lists Creating great content is only the white hat here

    White Hat:
    Guest Blogging
    Blog Writing
    Branding
    SMO
    Manual Link Building

I don't have to lists the blackhat coz I know most of us already know it.

Why does it matter what you call it (SEO)?

Just rank the page & move on...
