Can Social Media be as strong as the backlinking of old?

We've been thinking a lot about social media, and have been coming to the conclusion that it is the biggest factor for ranking any website in the industry today.

This brings us to the next question:

Do you think that social media shares, likes, or re-tweets are just as prominent as high PR relevant back links?

Why or why not?

    I think, that a solid foundation, with solid fundamentals and links, and I don't like to say back links but links. Not too many but quality links. As well as a little social media goes a long way.

    I think Social Media is on the way out soon and we need to get back to grass roots on building websites.

    Anyways those are my thoughts.

      Humans, by nature are social creatures, and with the rise of portable devices like smartphones and tablets, social media is a perfect fit for online users and as portals of information transfer. Google is taking keen notice of social media interactions so the answer to the thread's question is quite likely a very strong 'Yes!'

        Okay I should of said, Social Media for advertising for Internet Marketers I believe is out. At least from my stats its moving that way.

    As far as SEO is concerned, back linking is still the best bet. However, you cannot just neglect the relatively huge traffic you can scoop from these Social Networking sites. I must say shares, likes and re-tweets are fairly important.
