Hi, i spent about a year creating a site that was number one on google for many competitive terms, then it got slapped by one of the updates, in april i think, cant remember if it was penguin.
I lost interest fo ages.

Have decided to build a whole new site, but wondered if its best to use a subdomain of the original site or use a freash domain ?

Has anyone got genuine experience of this ?
Thanks

There are many factors really but since this happened back in April and clearly wasn't that big of an issue.. I would just create a new domain and move forward

In this case, I would definitely start a fresh site rather than use a subdomain. Using a subdomain would be the equivalent of adding a new room to a damaged house and expecting it to sell as much as a brand new house in good condition.

Defiantly a new domain. And make sure you build this one different to the one that got slapped!

That's crazy. I guess digital point should be shaking....along with disney, espn,
      about, wikipedia,....

People forget the words "lousy," "useless," "garbage," "trash," when talking
      about update statements from google.

Has nothing to do with subdomains.

I too suggest Fresh Domain ( think about Branding too )

Sub Domain will be considered as a different site by google ( think about all the accounts created in blogger are sub domains ) ,so there will not be any difference . You may be slapped by google following content farm update ( i think it is panda update ) Major content websites like Hubpages, Ezine articles also got penalised for thin content , they have created sub domains for each user account & survived it - so that only low quality sub domains will be penalised .

I suggest Fresh domain over sub domain - Many prefer http://mysite.com over www.mysite.com ,as the second on is a subdomain of mysite.com .

Also follow Google's updated guidelines .

    regards

Go with a new domain... the best choice.

Here /http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_MswMYk05tk Matt speaks a little about subdomains .... they are ok from seo point of view.
