Noob question here. What are tier 2 links?
#links #tier
  • Profile picture of the author jfambrini
It is tiered link building. Tier 4 links to Tier 3, tiered 3 to Tier 2, Tier 2 to Tier 1 and Tier 1 to your money site. Google though has caught up to it. The supposed advantage is that you can blast links to your tiers not worrying about if they tank. if they pick up in rank then your tier above gets a boost lifting up your site. At least that is how the theory goes. Haven't tried is so don't know its effectiveness.

      B.S.

Google has caught up to what? So Google has caught up to every page connecting to every other page on the net, and somehow thats a no-no? Yes I will agree, posting poorly spun content on tiers will most likely be discounted, but whose to say who put that link/tier up in the first place? Google welcomes quality "tiers" as that is what the web is made up of, and that's how Google knows where to rank your site. Google 'caught up' with Linkwheels because they are closed and not branched out enough. Saying google caught up with tiers is like saying google caught up with Wikipedia linking out to tons of websites.. so what's your point?

I agree. Building links to websites your link is on is very effective.

Yes jfambrini is right Google has caught on to this. So if your tier 2 links are crappy they will pass bad juice to your money site and bring it down in the SERP's.

The best thing to do is earn links to your sites. Meaning it takes some time and quality is key. VA's overseas can help with the time issue.

Dont worry about the different tiers, just get links head-on to your website. I've never found this method to be the end all solution. Think about it, is it really worth your time? In the end just get some quality links to your actual site.

I agree your main focus should be getting quality links directly to your site (because these should attract links in themselves in a perfect world). But there is merit on a whitehat level to build tier 2 links.

What's wrong with SEOmoz? I know they have a white hat brand to protect and so you need to read through the lines a bit but they're a great resource. Plus I've found loads of great new SEO blogs to follow through their guest posters.

If you're going to make a comment putting down a resource please explain why and back up your opinion.

Tier linking honestly is a longer process. You would be better off just buying quality links from related sites with pagerank (real pagerank not fake).

Exactly , there is no use creating links that you need 2nd tier links to get indexed or strenghthned or whatever. Just get some quality link and forget about tiers.

Guest posting is where you go to other blogs related to your niche/industry and ask them if you can write an article for them. They then list the article you write and give you a link back.

You write your own article (and you can promote your own website) on other blogs in order to receive traffic and boost your SERP.

Sometimes this could be free, but sometimes people would charge you money (if the blog is too popular).

The best thing is that you can choose blogs related to your niche and your article (and mostly your backlink) would be really powerful!

I would do tier linking. however you want to do linking to your niche. If your doing a niche on dog training, then your teir 2 links should be related to dog training or dog obedience and link to your tier 1 site, then your tier 1 site gets link juice and that links to your Money Site or site you want to rank high for. You should implement this just becareful and make sure its quality content that your linking back.

Works very effectively for me as well for a very long time for more sites than I can even remember.

However the rest of the advice in this thread should be considered and is certainly not any more/less effective but certainly poses a different approach & mindset.

But even with things like guest posting, you can automate that for the most part except for ordering an article - tutorial on my site ^^

+1 Absolutely, posting junk on tiers will only create problems for you in the longrun. Kind of like the old saying, "Garbage in, garbage out" But to blindly say "google catches this and that so everything you do is useless now, blah blah blah", and to say these things as an absolute fact, rather than being honest and saying "I could be wrong, but it's my belief that..." is just narrow mindedness imho. Perhaps but I think you are kidding yourself. The whole point of multi tiered link building is so you can use junk links. If you have good quality links you would either send them to your money site or at the most go one tier and be done. At some point in the process with hundreds and thousands of sites you ARE posting junk no matter how you kid yourself its not.

I don't know that tiered link building is declining in effectiveness but its got to be next up on Google's hit list. They have been systematically going after every link spam technique marketers run around sharing and teaching. To think they are going to penalize for mass blasting links to a money site but not find a way to lessen the link juice effectiveness of other sites you blast that lead to your money site is just wishful thinking.

As for the objection that Google doesn't know that you blasted the tiered site - welcome to 2012 - Google couldn't care less.

    let's put it this way.

You want strong sites to link to you. (Call this tier 1)

but how does this site become a strong site? They have links pointing to them (Their T1 links but T2 links to you)

and this goes on and on and on

Dont look at it like a pyramid. It's what makes the internet and it will never be gone.

People share one thing on twitter. Somebody RT's the tweet then someone shares the retweet on Pheed then someone shares that link on Facebook. See the point?

It happens everyday with each second that passes.

You too are kidding yourself. tiered link building as its practiced by Internet marketers on this board bears little similarity to linking profiles across the general web. Forum profiles linking to bookmarks linking to web 2.0s is not how the web is constructed. Its not only unnatural looking its just downright impossible to be natural. Furthermore the average non spamming site gets its PR from solid links not tons of thousands of junky ones so thats completely opposite to what Google is looking for.

In my buying of aged domains research a dead give away is any site with thousands of links and PR below 4. Google already has metrics to easily spot link spam tiers it just a matter of how and when they decide to utilize it.
