My website, Original Press Releases is a page rank 1. About six months ago I hired a couple guys on Fiverr.com to get a lot of .edu back links because I thought it'd boost my ranking to a page rank 2.

It didn't work. My site is still a PR 1 :-(

Have you gotten .edu back links and have you experienced an increase is page rank?

.edu links carry no special ranking power. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

You need links from other pages with PR in order to boost your own PR.

You're right Mike ".edu links carry no special ranking power"

I wouldn't say I wasted my money hiring those guys to get links for me what I didn't get the results I wanted.

The problem is you got them on Fiverr mate...

There are some people who sell actual sub level edu links on HIGH pr edu pages. Those are the ones you want. Not fiverr spammed comment edu backlinks.

Those links still carry no extra ranking power over the same kind of .com, .net, .org, .bs links.

EDU links are a big freaking myth.

Oh yeah for sure. But idk I still think having them helps to some degree. I wouldnt go crazy. 1-5 of them and then do your normal link building.

But you gotta agree the main problem here is they were fiverr comment links.

A real on-page edu link even if it has no page rank and no backlinks to it is better then a blog comment filled with spammed blog comment links?....

I agree. They could be a myth. Probably started by someone selling .edu back links :-)

Google does gives any extra weightage to .edu or any other TLDs, Moreover personally i am bit doubtful about quality of backlinks (which you brought from fiverr gigs )

Yes, edu baclinks help. Try to obtain an edu backlink from a high PR site (7 or 8)

if you are serious about rankings, don't ever think of FIVERR

The value in .edu/.gov/.mil links isn't because of the TLD, it's because they are usually on trusted and authoritative domains; they get linked to alot.

.edu and .gov links provide no extra value that a similarly authoritative .com or .net or .org would provide. Just like there are junk .com pages, there are also junk .edu pages ..like those Fiverr edu comments you bought.

The question is not with EDU or GOV backlinks but its with the 'Authority' of backlink.

Not only domain extension with these special tlds (.edu, .gov) but a simple .com , .org or even .info can be Authority website. And getting a backlink from these authority website is worth your effort. It is as simple as that.

Then why people are so obsessed with EDU/GOV Backlink?

Those people also have a valid point!

There are 25,270,000,000 .com, 4,100,000,000 .org, 7,570,000,000 .net domains indexed by Google compared to only 323,000,000 .edu domains. And there is a high number of authority domains among these 323,000,000 domains and that number is ever larger than total authority sites of .com, .org and .net altogether. That's why in general there is a conception that '.edu backlink is synonymous to authority', which is not a false statement either.

I couldn't agree more! I've had good and not-so-great luck with .edu links and it comes right down to quality. For example, having an link within content on a .edu blog with a decent page rank can definitely give you a bump. However, a spammy blog comment on that same blog may do you little to no good at all.

Most packages on FIVERR deliver lots of spammy links (blog comments, forum profiles, etc.) Worse yet, most are auto-generated comments that are easily spotted as spam. These are exactly the kinds of links that Google is devaluing -- and since the last rounds algorithm adjustments, I certainly wouldn't waste my time.
