Okay guys I've had my blog up and running for several days now and It's yet to even show up on the search engines.

Something I have not done is add any plugins to help with SEO, as I am new to wordpress I'm not sure of the best gizmos, any advice?

My blog is here:

    Installed. Thank you.

Should I create an XML sitemap and manually submit it to Google, I do this with my static sites but I don't know if I need to with wordpress?

    I'd recommend Yoast

  • With regards to Google XML sitemaps plug-in - don't forget to actually submit your generated sitemap to GWT.

Yoast generates XML sitemaps by itself, no need for other plugins. And yes you must submit it manually for it to work properly.

Google XML sitemap does everything you need. The other plugins like "All in SEO" are quite useless, because everything they do, can be done via changes in the WP template and robots.txt. At least, your blog won't lose its loading speed.

Are you seriously suggesting that it is better to manually change WP templates to create your desired titles and meta descriptions? How would you even do that anyway when the title and description will be different for each page.

Messing with templates if you're not a coder is not always the smartest thing to do. Plugins like "All in SEO" are great, will save you some time and avoid frustration (we were all newbies at one point).

        Plugins to use:
        • Google XML Sitemaps
        • SEO Smart Links Business
        • W3 Total Cache
        • WP Widget Cache
        • WP Smush.it
        • and something like Yoast or All-In-SEO, unless of course, you're as smart as mr CyberSEO over here.
        • Simple Feed Copyright

The robots.txt I suggest doing yourself, there are many good ones online available for download (thanks to other warriors and internet marketers) if you're not sure how to do this. Just do a Google search.

OK - Finally someone who has used these plugins and have a sense that 'something is wrong'. My last several responses on this subject were deleted but since a Warrior opened a thread and directly asked a question about their effectiveness, I am hoping the moderator won't delete again.

Inxie - whether Yoast, All-in-One or other, they will NEVER be as effective as manual WP SEO. I say this because I tested them and understand they are GREAT @ providing information but I challenge any Warrior to produce results that these toys have allowed you to penetrate competitive keyword markets and achieve your SEO goals. Show all of us High SERPS which resulted from a plugin - anyone?

Here are competitive keywords all here will be familiar with - affiliate marketing, internet marketing, powerpoint marketing, insurance coverage, seo, seo services'.

The above keywords are amongst the TOP 20 most competitive on the Internet. Has anyone achieved Top 3 rankings in any of these markets with any SEO plugin?

Inxie - cut your losses now, learn manual SEO with Wordpress and I GUARANTEE you will see much more pleasing organic search results. These tools are GREAT for affiliate sellers and even better for their creators from a profits perspective and I understand that and would never begrudge folks trying to earn a living.

My company used to offer manual SEO services and WITHOUT exception, achieved TOP three search rankings in whatever market we pleased. Our largest client base were those who thought SEO Plugins would deliver more than they ever could and needed a real solution.

I am not trying to anger Warriors again but I have seen so many just like Inxie who have HUGE entreprenurial dreams only to be faced with the reality of tools that are ineffective.

Moderator - I await your verdict but remember - a Warrior asked the question!

I use these on every wordpress site I create
    • Yoast Wordpress SEO: better than all in one SEO, but like someone else said, you have to fill out everything. My favorite feature is the Snippet Preview. Always use it to add link bait to your search results.
    • Google XML Sitemaps
    • Wp super cache
    • BackupBuddy

Those pages are important, but keep in mind that each business is different. These TOS and PP pages won't apply to all pages, so read them before deciding to auto-publish this to your blog.

Also, if you're using tools like the one above, make sure you make the page "noindex" to avoid any possible duplicate content penalties.

Hi there. I'm new here and I have tons of questions. I'm the owner/webmaster at a site called Books for Kids. I'm actually an author, promoting on a shoestring budge and having to learn all this SEO stuff as I go.

I've used SEO Ultimate and want to try All In One SEO now. SEO Ultimate works ok, but I get a lot of duplicate meta "stuff" in google.

My question is actually about Jetpack though. If I use All in One along with Jetpack, am I duplicating submissions to search engines?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

I love Yoast but you have to be very careful how you set it up. I set it up incorrectly a few years ago and it sank my site. After I tweaked it it's maximum benefit, it rocked.

If you are serious into internet business then try some premium theme like "Thesis" which has built-in SEO features. The price may seem high but with unlimited sites and lifetime free upgrade support this is really awesome!
