HELP ! How to Create a Panda-Proof Site?

Hey

I own many websites.... I was hit by Penguin and it was my first algo hit I"ve ever had. But then Panda finally got me Early Oct of this year. But never before that. And now, I just had a tumblr site hit (by Panda v21 on the 5th) and I cannot figure out why.

I never want to be hit by Panda ever again!

And I need to know how to do it.

So far, this is what I think I need to do:

  • Have navigation above the fold.
  • Have very long content (600+ words?)
  • Have content that talks about the same thing (ie, 3 "Dog food" Articles on a dog food site).
  • Have pictures, videos, and other engaging content.
  • Do not have many links / ads that lead off-site that are above fold.
  • Do not have a call to action / link that leads off-site on every post
  • Make sure to have content that isn't fully related, but is in the same theme. Otherwise the site looks too overoptimized. Maybe even BACKLINK to this content ?

Anyone else have any tips? These are just what I THINK i need to do. Please do not take this as proven advice.

I like the direction that this is headed--if you're going to backlink to the content in an attempt to get the penalty shrugged off, don't cheap out on the links...good links, that are relevant and don't go crazy with it. You may not see the site coming back up very quickly, so just give it some time; if you get in a rush, you can make things worse than they already are.

    Have navigation above the fold.
Doesn't matter, all Wikipedia nav. is in the footer, they use Absolute CSS to make the nav. links you see on the HTML page float to the top of the page. Google see's all Wikipedia nav. in the footer.

Have very long content (600+ words?)
Doesn't matter, I rank pages all the time with a single sentence (not a typo).

Have content that talks about the same thing (ie, 3 "Dog food" Articles on a dog food site).
Yep, you need multiple relevant pages.

Have pictures, videos, and other engaging content.
Can't hurt, but not having those things isn't going to keep a page from ranking.

Do not have many links / ads that lead off-site that are above fold.
I don't think that's true. I was ranking plenty of pages with Clickbank links above the fold, before I dumped CB (actually those pages still rank but they'll fade away soon since I set the pages to private).

Make sure to have content that isn't fully related, but is in the same theme. Otherwise the site looks too overoptimized. Maybe even BACKLINK to this content ?
    Yep, you need relevant content/pages/links.

Actually in my initial post, when I said this "Have content that talks about the same thing (ie, 3 "Dog food" Articles on a dog food site)." I meant to say to AVOID having repetitive content that talks about the same thing (crafted around the same keywords). I think this is a big causer of Panda hits for me. Redundant content.

Thanks for your help Yukon. You provided your classic iconoclastic / cryptic response... but some of it helped.

The reason I posted this post is because I have several (10-15) sites that rank in one niche, and one of them was hit while the others stayed. It was a tumblr site. I cant' really figure out what caused it to get hit. I think that the lack of interlinking between articles could've been a culprit. Or perhaps that tumblr doesn't have good built-in navigation.

Listen, the truth is that the recent Google update was aimed at making the search engines more aware of auto-software links and people trying to manipulate the search engines. If you do an honest job on your website, you won't need to take any important measures to protect your website. The best advice is this:

Write quality content and build links manually using quality content.

In life you have probably heard the term "no quick buck in life" so why would you think ranking would be easy and simple too? It not because it hard work..trust me.

    Thanks Guru.

But I dont think Panda is really link based at all. Is it?
I thought that was more Penguins job.
My sites do have great onsite content and off-site links.

You are definitely on the right track. But the main point is to adjust your mindset. Believe it or not this really helps in designing a completely Panda/Penguin proof website.

Adjust your mindset to be building sites FOR your visitors. If you happen to need to recommend a product or two here and there just make it subtle and possibly add an affiliate link or two in there.

First and foremost you will need to be writing for your visitors, not for your wallet.
