it's ok unless Google can't detect that both sites belong to same person. However if you're linking then you should focus on contextual linking instead of footer link or sidebar link.

That's not true at all. Microsoft.com links to Bing, Xbox, and other Microsoft properties.

You can find tons of examples like this.

Interlinking between websites you own is a great way to increase rankings. I dont know what these other warriors are talking about. Btw I have been working as an SEO expert for numerous companies so trust my advice. Make sure you footer the link and put the keyword that you want to rank for.

Link exchange is not an effective way of link building. There is more of a chance that your website may go down when a third party person removes your link. So, avoid link exchange.

@adystanley -- Sorry for all the mixed feedback and resulting confusion. That's one thing you need to be careful about on the Warrior Forum. Not all responses you receive are truly good advice. A lot of folks -- with good intentions -- unknowingly perpetuate myths or share personal opinions that simply aren't grounded in fact. Further, some advice was really great advice several years ago -- or even a few months ago! -- but it no longer may apply. Those who haven't kept abreast of the changes may pass along out of date advice that is simply no longer accurate. This is especially true when it comes to link building and certain SEO practices, in particular.

I teach online and social media marketing at the university level and I closely follow the latest information from the top sources (Matt Cutts at Google, Rand Fishkin at SEOMoz, Dharmesh Shah at Hubspot, among others). From these sources I learn about what's working and what's not, as well as what can hurt your websites and blogs, what can help, and what won't matter. Here are my opinions based on the questions you asked:

    1. Linking between two sites, both owned by you: Yes, you can do it and no, your site(s) won't be penalized. If the two sites are hosted on separate IP addresses, and it's not clear to the engines that the sites are both owned by you, there is a chance it could even help a wee bit. If both sites are hosted on the same server, you can still do it and you won't be penalized. However, the links are unlikely to help you out much. As an FYI -- links from one site passed from within article content carry more weight than links in footers, sidebars, or a "links" page. This is something that has changed in the past year.

    2. Duplicate content and whether Google (and other engines) recognize the original source: Yes, the search engines can recognize the original source. There is tons of misinformation about duplicate content and what it can and can't do. Other self-hosted sites that use information that has been used before do not get penalized or banned as many seem to think (and erroneously continue to share). However, that does NOT mean that reusing content is okay. It's not. Unless is it content purchased as PLR content, it's theft. Here's a great article with valuable information on the topic of web theft and copyright infringement from Bruce Clay, a very well respected blogger. Hope it helps! thanks for link exchange advice.
what is better to do? to add the homepage link with an anchor text of a post or to add anchor text and a post link?

Link from the blog post back to the main static page for the keyword you are trying to rank for. For example: You have a blog post on caring for a newly adopted dog. In that post your mention the importance of a healthy diet and selecting the right dog food. You could hyperlink dog food (as your anchor text) back to the main page you are trying to rank for dog food. Does this make sense?
