Google results show synonym to search term - effect on SEO for affiate site?

Hi everyone,

I'm probably an 'advanced-beginner' in SEO marketing and am trying to set up a few more Amazon sites. I came across something that I haven't seen before. Searching the forum didn't help, so here it goes...

I found a 3 word search term for an Amazon affiliate site that looks like it could perform well. There are not many other sites with this exact phrase, or have the phrase in the title, etc. It gets sub-1000 searches per month.

However, when I type the search term into Google, all of the sites shown in the results use a synonym for one of the words. It would be the equivalent of typing in 'contemporary red widgets' and having all the results be about 'modern red widgets.' In my mind, this would be a good thing because there are so few sites that are ranking for my search term that they had to go to synonyms in order to flesh it out more. Am I going about this right or am I missing something?

I thought it would depend on the exact match keyword that was being searched for? If you use that exact matched keyword then you'll rank higher in the search results and higher than the synonyms. That's my understanding. Google will give precedence to 100% exact searches.
