Confused about google analytics impressions and avg position

On 28th of oct I was sunk: google anaytics says: no more impressions, no clicks - nothing. I was still indexed though.

Now, apparently some of my keywords are back on the first page of google - according to the info in webmaster tools: 'avg.position', but still I have ridiculously low impressions - and I only get 1 or 2 visitors a day.

When I check manually, some of the keywords that are supposedly on page one are not there at all.

Is someone here who can help me make sense of this?

Well one thing is for sure it sounds like your site is "bouncing" around within the search engines. That means it has not given your website a designated spot yet.

When performing on-page optimization, building back links, linking to social media, web 2.0's and other SEO techniques this can cause your site to bounce around every few minutes, hours, days etc.

This could be one cause. You could have loaded your code wrong for google Analytics and that is why you don't see any traffic.

Also, if you are targeting shorter tail keywords with lots of competition it is a bit more difficult to really stay on the top of those pages without constantly building back links, web 2.0 sites to link from and such.

That could be another reason for the "bouncing around" and reporting of page one rankings but you are not truly there.

I wouldn't trust webmaster tools (search console) because those are refreshed probably on a daily basis not an hourly basis. There are tools on the web that can provide you this information.

I use rankranger.com, but there are so many ranking tools on the web that you can use.
