I have started to build a niche site and I don't own a domain with the keywords I am targeting. Is this still important with Google's new algorhythem?

If you plan on creating niche sites with minimal content in hopes of soaring to the top of Google based solely on your domain name, you're wasting your time. I had a few CPA sites like this before the update that were doing well in rankings until the update hit. I do however have one site that remains at the top, but I spent much more time in creating it and I still continue to develop it today. So, if you plan on making these niche sites into authority sites, having an EMD can't hurt.

Success doesn't come in an instant, just like Rome wasn't built in a day.

Meinkraft pretty much said it all.

When you say, important re Penguin algorithm and continued updates, there are two ways to interpret it, as Meinkraft said. It is important in that a thin EMD site will not rank.

But based on all I've read, you can still rank if you develop the site. And I have to tell you that I know of a few people who can rank a thin EMD site, still. But they don't last long and probably just as long until either someone reports it, negative seo's it, or Google finds it and it's gone.

Again, based on all I've read, there is still 'a little' value in having an EMD, but it's nothing like what it was. How much of an edge you get from it is unknown, of course, and whatever amount that is will probably not propel you to first page glory.

    Other thoughts...

If you have an EMD, it will attract the kind of attention you may not want. But if you're not doing anything questionable or dubious, then that should not be a concern.

Also think about how it may appeal to the end user. There are nicer names other than, bestcatfoodforhealthyfelines.org. Exaggerated example.

Get a domain that has branding power if you want to develop your site. Try for two syllables, max. Single syllable domains are very hard to find in .com, net, or probably org.

And preferably the short name will be relevant in some way to the topic or theme of your site.

I think EMD which has less competition and less number of authority website can work well on google I have 3 websites having long tail keyword domains that are always in top 3 results for the keywords irrespective of google updates

If you just google the long tail keywords which have the above 2 criteria satisfied, there are high chances that you will find an exact matching keyword in the top 3 results.

Look at your competition. Do relatively small sites with keyword domains rank in the top 10, or is it dominated by authority sites or mega sites (like wikipedia and ehow)?

Keyword domains can still help in some cases, but if they're not working for anyone else chasing that search term, they probably won't work for you either.

Thank you for all the responses; I joined the forum today and this was my first question. I am impressed with how quick people were to respond with insightful comments.

The top 10 domains are all brand names and do not contain the keyword. My real curiosity is if there is any way to measure the value of EMD. Sounds like the benefit is minimal and since I have already developed my brand it is not worth starting from ground zero.
