Here are some things to stay away from:
- Fiverr services selling their "linkbuilding" services or blasts of tens of thousands of links. Spamming your link across the internet to random sources isn't the way to build a reputable business or the correct way to do SEO.
- Cheap SEO services that claim to add thousands of links pointing to your website for a cheap price. Again, they're more than likely utilizing bot/spam programs to blast you link to god knows where.

Where To Start?

- Web 2.0 Platforms are a great place to start as long as you make sure you're following the following guidelines: Make sure every backlink is unique and relative to the site you're linking to. Does the content on the backlink contain content that's relevant to your site and have keywords that you hope your site could be found for in the search engines?

Are your links spread out across the internet or do you have a ton of links from just one source?

- Other forums while they don't hold as much weight today in SEO terms, still hold some weight and are a great source of targeted traffic that can help build up a list and your Alexa ranking as well.

- While some believe article directories are dead, I very much so believe they are alive. It's all in how you use them and how you're distributing your articles. Again, spread your articles out over different networks rather than just putting all of them onto one site and hoping Google praises you for it.

That's a basic rundown as I don't have time to type a novel of information on SEO tonight, but that should give you a basic idea of the basics.

Best approach is to take your time and actually plan out your link network. Building good links takes time and persistence often allowing web 2.0 s to mature a bit before linking to them directly. Stay away from bots and anything that offers speed.

Forums Posting,
Social Bookmarking,
Articles Submissions With Unique Content,
Blog Comments On High Page Rank Dofollow Blogs.
Web 2.0 etc

Your main keywords and other kind of keywords must have different percentages. Keep your main keyword under 5 percent because of the EMD updates. Keep your branded keyword as low as 20 percent. The Penguin update is intended to increase and promote brand awareness.

Guest blogging, buy quality links, private blog networks, article directories, web2.0 (ala Squidoo, Tumblr), forum posting (like this one),.....

And most importantly, build your BRAND!!

Get social, make youtube videos, contribute in you niche, email marketing....
