Just curious, does having a backlink in the footer of the sites I design have any negative impact with google. I usually put Website Design by Above Creative in the footer but not sure if this does more harm than good.

Google stated this is generally bad, i disagree, and for few website which allow me, i put a sitewide link - different anchors / images.. no / do follow and different PR...

just have more backlink sources youll do good.

So, you don't care what google says? I'd stay away from any of your
advice, even if in this case it's kind of muddled anyway in response
to the question. There's no such thing as do follow anyway....and the
other stuff about varying anyhting is hogwash.

You need to ask yourself these questions:

Do you force the people to put a link? (not good)
Are you doing it for publicity, traffic, or PR? (each has consequences)
Is it sitewide? (sitewide is looked upon as spam)
Can people change the site anyway they want?(You may get a link
      on a junk page)

If I paid for a site design, I would not like being forced
to link to anything. I would decline your services.

I don't think that could be enforced anyway, although people
      may disagree.

Footer links are the lowest of the low on the scale of getting
      good links.

If you designed their website for free, then it's a different matter.
You should be entitled to a link in that case. But then, the cautions
      are still there.

I don't think site designers are in the same ball game as regular IM
people, so it may be a moot point.

Putting any backlinks on the footer is not violating Google's rules, so this is safe for SEO purpose on Google! But most visitors don't see the bottom, so they don't know the presence of the backlinks.

I think its quite simple. If the link is trusted, you can replicate is as many times as you like. There is no problem, otherwise all the design sites would all get slapped as well - which is absurd.
However you do need to have enough authority to do it. If you are software developer or designer, do submit it to different communities to get yourself some decent pr and a couple of natural backlinks.
If no one heard of your software or a theme/module, and it finds out you get thousands backlinks out of nowhere - then you will probably get slapped as usual.

If you're worried about it just make the link nofollow

    Problem solved

Considering I used to run a web dev company and did this for all my clients sites (I specialized in ecommerce) Cubecart Skins, Templates, Themes & Mods | SkinCubeCart.com (Powered by CubeCart) was my site.

I placed it as a Designed By link and google ranked my site #2 for its main term back in the day. IDK about nowadays how practical it is but I say its still better then no link at all.

Actually it depends on the site that use this signateur.
If there is a spam network that decided to use your theme on most of their sites, then you are in a huge trouble. :p
IF its high quality sites, oh well...
But simply blasting them for no reason would never work todays imho. You would need to mix them up with some authority links, even in small proportions.
