Rankings Disappeared, PR increased - trying to make sense

Guys, I'm confused as heck.

At the beginning of Oct, all my keywords fell out of Google. A month later, my PR increases from 1 to 2?!? What is this most likely to be - why would my PR increase after my visitors and rankings plummet?

If it were a result of bad backlinks - surely my PR would lower too...

What would you guys do, try the Google disavow tool?

My domain is an EDN with 5 keywords, but all my content is uniquely written by me so surely it isn't a result of the EDN algo... I am beyond confused.

I am tempted to erase everything on the site and repopulate with new material - start all over after 18 months of growing...

PR can be attributed to links from high quality sites that Google already trusts. However, just because your Page rank increased doesn't necessarily correlate to keyword rankings.

Many different factors can be apart of why your rankings dropped. For example, did you make any page URL changes, Meta description, Title tag, H-1 tag changes on the website?

I would not start over because your content isn't what made your rankings drop

PR isn't about directly about "good" or "bad" backlinks. Things like anchor text diversity, on-page SEO, duplicate content etc etc have no impact on PR, hence the reason your rankings can tank and your PR go up.

Like the above posts. Your keywords dropped most likely because you were penalized

However the links are still there and pointing at your website to the PR is still transferred

    The two aren't related .

Thanks for the replies guys, the no correlation thing makes sense now.

I have always tried to vary anchor text (even have a spreadsheet to automate a href html tag generation so I don't get it wrong ) and use easy WP SEO for on-page SEO signals (max 1.5% KD).

As for duplicate content, syndicated content maybe - but I always make sure my pages are indexed first before syndicating anything.

I think I'll try the disavow tool and see if it makes a difference.

      Thanks again for the insight!

      James.

    Not necessarily !
Bad links won't help you in SERP but they gonna be still counted for link juice. Keep it mind, PR and SERP are two different matrix

You can try disavow tool but it's bit risky. Submit only those link where you are 100% sure about quality of link

May be it is due to EMD update, but a number of times the site back for those keywords. You know more well than me about Google always love to play regarding the rankings. So wait few days and concentrate on putting good contents.Check back your analytics for a depth understanding of traffic.Be careful before using Google disavow tool since It can wash out your previous SEO efforts.

Thanks guys, you changed my mind about the disavow tool, reading through the Google page and the comments, doesn't really look like it does much anyway.

I think the plan is to focus on traffic generation techniques outside of Google for a while, I really should not have relied on Google so much from the start, a good lesson to learn!

I suspect the exact match domain is the issue. Get a new "brandable" domain name and use the exact match domain as a source of decent links.
