How many backlinks would scare you off?

I know that there is a difference in the quality vs. quantity of backlinks - but how many would there have to be to discourage you from trying to compete for a particular keyword term?

And, how much does exceptional content outweigh page backlinks?

Thanks

Building quality back links takes time so it is a question of time invested and rewards gained, If you have to put in a ton of work to rank above the competition but don't earn much it's a poor ROTI but really most are do able with a good plan.
Content is king! If you have engaging, entertaining and informative content people will share it and talk about it so links don't really come into it.

      This is correct.

If the content is good, people will link to it naturally, without you having to ask or you having to fabricate popularity for the page.

Depending on if your content can attract links or not will determine the real value that a page has to give to you through your content.

Pictures and videos go viral far more often than articles, but some articles attract a ton of attention. For example, have you ever read Mashable.com? Those articles tend to attract a lot of back links, based exclusively on the quality of the content.

I think they kind of go hand-in-hand. With exceptional content, people will naturally want to link to it from their site, for their readers.

Well, I've seen one particular site in a #3 spot for a certain keyword with 600k+ backlinks, whereas the #2 spot had about 12k links. So, nothing is too scary.
