What is the opinion on press releases?
For backlink purposes, useful anymore?

We used to do a lot of them but after the update they stopped indexing high and most old ones vanished.

More targeted, i guess?

Any to stay away from or recommend
In past we have used prweb, prlog, pr.com, pressreleasepoint, bunch of free ones also.

Press release is one of the best way to increase instant traffic to your website
These websites syndicate your content to many other sites and other news feeds, spreading the message severely and generating massive traffic for your website.
An another cool reason behind to use press releases is that they are crawled very soon by search engines and provide huge traffic to your websites.

Press releases are still working for some niche. While you will be launching a new product or service, through press release you will be able let a bigger audience to know about it. It works fantastic for technology related sites.

I can imagine that indeed, you really need to come up with something new or it has no value.

The truth is if you have nothing to say do not even start a press release.

A lot of people use this like article directory, it's not only wrong but not going to work for the intended purpose because it has no planning..

Press releases are hardly effective from SEO point of view, not only me says that (who submitted 150+ Premium $369 costing PRweb press releases in the last months, got a yearly deal so obvious for a ton cheaper or I would have felt hugely ripped off) but a few other SEO's that I know confirmed it as well.

The only thing that it's good for is that it creates some natural back links opposed to all the public sites that everyone and his mother can spam

When using the exact anchor txt inside the release it can even be dangerous to submit press releases (especially for brand new sites) as it generates a few dozen tier 1 links so I would always suggest to use the url and domain name as anchor txt.

Just another little tip: SBwire and E-mailwire are DEAD, you should be happy to get 1 or 2 back links from them after submitting a $99 costing release. Just trust me on that.

I was very disappointed with my first (and possibly last) press release. I used a PRWeb Premium package through a company who actually wrote the press release. I do not see any backlinks whatsoever (other than those that PRWeb shows you) as a result. My Alexa ranking did not change at all.

The PR pointed to my home page and a couple articles on the web site and seems generally well-written.

Maybe my expectations were too high (the marketing company might have had something to do with that), but as far as I can tell I have just thrown away that money. How can I even tell if the campaign did any good?

You can ask them to make a screenshot of the number of impressions and views of headlines that the press release got, as well as a few other stats that show up in the PRweb dashboard.

But yeah if you want real exposure you need REAL news.

When you search for the title in quotes you will see which sites picked it up btw, do make sure you click the link to see if it's not some scraper site who just scraped your headlines only. If you haven't gotten any links ( you should at least be shown at news.yahoo.com) then it can be that your release is submitted under Limited distribution cause it didn't follow their guidelines properly. In that case I would ask my money back.

        I received a report listing:
        44,766 total impressions
        9,079 media deliveries
        107 pickups

Yes, if you type the headline in quotes at Google you will see 6 pages of hits, but who on earth would ever type that? I need real back links that will send my site traffic. How can I tell that it did any good? Ultimately what matters is traffic to my site. I can't see where I am getting any additional traffic.

You are missing the point here, I only said that so that you can see if there are sites that pick it up as you stated that it created 0 links, while based on the above stats it's been picked up 107 times, so that means 107 back links. (which is about average btw, we get the same numbers 9 out of 10 times).

Most of you uses it for backlinking purposes only but I also used this for exposure. Most of the companies that feature their press release to well-known websites got a good exposure.

Press releases are the best way to get links , the only thing you need to do is write quality content , and write a press release or news release of whatever is going on those days , go to google news , pick up a topic of your niche , and write something about it , it will get picked up by so many sites.

Many marketers say that don't use PR anymore. However, I've decided to test that myself, because I'm curious about the "additional" traffic PR will give me. I'll let you know my results.

Jacob, would love to see results of your test. Till three years ago I used to use them a lot. THey use to come on first way within three days of release and I used to get a lot of traffic and inquiries. I tried them again after reading here but got nowhere so gave up but perhaps I gave up too quickly.

I am just wondering how I see the real world results of the PR. It doesn't appear that my primary keyword phrase brings my web site any higher in the SERPs. How can I say it was really worth it?

Press releases is tricky thing. You're submitting press releases to get attentions from news and pr media. If you've something great (i.e. product, service or concept) and need attention from news media then you can distribute PR and they write news about you. SERPs has nothing to do with PR directly.

As long as you can post quality content on a service you have to offer then I know that you'll see success in building quality backlinks and generating good traffic!

Press releases could help attracting "curious" traffic. Also some business partners... a few links... usually the free PR's aren't worth too much. Tried several a few years ago and didn't pay off.

Try them, just don't expect too much. Do a little article marketing.

I still see a lot of PRweb releases in the serps, have to believe that some PR services are still worth the money. Also have seen some use for reputation management. I would not count on any anchor text bump from releases, but a good one that makes it to the right outlets can definitely have a positive effect.

For both quality targeted traffic and do-follow links make sure Google News is included. Usual price around $100 on forums.

For backlinks purpuses and some useful and relevant traffic use regular newswire sites or services that offer reports. Around $35 you can get it here at WF, depends provider as usual.

    Hope this helps.

Yes! They are effective for backlinking, but do check out the Pagerank first. Anything above pagerank 4 will benefit your site...

We see a trend of increased ranking for press releases right now. Might be because of changes of the search engine algorithms. Don't expect the same traffic as from "bought traffic", but the CTR tends to be very high (20-50%). Some of our press releases get consistantly 30-50 views a day and 15-20 clicks from that.

our main source of traffic now days is press releases.

I would say 95% of people do it wrong!! probalby more!

ON the test we did, you cannot just spin a crappy article and submit it, but most people do. You cannot just do a high quality article and post it.

After years of studying and research what works. We even hire a retired journo to do all our press releases for a low fee, and they work well.

But like I said 95% or so people do it wrong. From what I see. They just post articles and then come back to the warrior forum saying press releases are crap. LOL. so funny!

You have to know what works, create news around an event, and learn how to link bait and make it worthwhile for people to read, and send them over to your optin page. ITs not a science its actually more of an artform, But get it right and you can kill it with this 1 traffic techniqes, its worked wonders for our business.
