Changing URL's - Will I lose my Backlinks?

Hi,

I am considering change my .com.au url to .com for my blog due to the increase in traffic and potential increase in revenue I will get with a larger audience.

I realise I will lose my page rank and have to work from scratch here. Will I also lose all my backlinks? My blog uses wordpress.

Is there a way to preserve my backlinks once I pick my blog up and move it from .com.au to .com domain name? (Domain name is in all other respects the same, gamesfromeverywhere....

Thanks,
David

Yes, you can 301 redirect every url from the .com.au to the respective .com url. You will not lose your PageRank either since the 301 redirect also transfers the PageRank. But, unless you are selling text links (which you shouldn't do) you should not worry at all about PageRank.

    Thanks so much for this.

How long should I use a 301 for?
Does it mean I have to keep the old domain alive somehow?
Will Google penalise me if i leave the 301 there indefinitely? and.....

The PR issue has to do with perception. Those who pay to publish on my site might think it less worthwhile if my page rank is 1.

    Appreciate any advice.

301 is a permanent type of redirection so you will used it forever otherwise your backlinks from that domain will gone.

        Hi Ronnie,

I understand that its permanent, but does that mean I have to "keep" my old site in order to redirect the traffic? I know it's probably a dumb question.

I guess another way of asking it is, does my redirect go in the wordpress associated with the old site (e.g, someone clicks old link; old site sends them to new) or do I do the redirect via some robot text, for example, in the new site?

          All you need to do is create your new domain and transfer the pages accross. Once you have done that go back to your old site and create a .htaccess file. Now for every page you have you need to create a line of code to link the old page to the new page like this;

          redirect 301 /randompage.php http://www.newdomaimname/randompage.php

What this will do is tell the spiders that the page isn't there any more and it will send them to where the new page is. Most of the page rank will go accross but you won't see visually until the next page rank update.

If you have a big site you with too many url's you can just point the whole site to the homepage of your new domain but the page rank will only get passed to the new homepage and then will spread to the rest of your site from that page. You will lose internal page rank by doing that but here's the code for it. You will then have to delete the pages off your old site or you will have duplicate content.

          ErrorDocument 404 http://newdomain.com

          or try this

          RewriteEngine On
          RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.olddomain.com$
          RewriteRule (.*)$ http://www.newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

I'm sure people will correct me if I have the code wrong but that's pretty much what you have to do. Make sure you keep the old domain because as soon as you give it up the 301's will not work any more. Hope it helps.

Yes, you will keep it but if you don't want to keep it for a long time just make sure you build quality links for your site first and make sure that you are ranking well so that when you don't want to keep your old domains the ranking will still not affected.

"Don't worry about the links from the old domain if it is not really quality."

I have tried the 301 redirect technique a few times and 9 times out of 10 it has worked. Normally you get a drop in rankings temporarily for maybe 4-6 weeks in which after your new domain should take effect on all the redirected links. Your PR will be 0 to start off with but on the next Google PR update, you may see the original PR come back.

            Good Luck

Use a 301 permanent redirect - you will retain your back-links. But those back-links will be redirected back-links (not sure if they are as powerful as the direct back-links!) Initially, your pagerank will be dropped to N/A for sure, but it will surely pick up again as the link juice and domain authority is transferred from the previous domain to your new domain.
