Domain name history doubt

Hi,
I purchased a domain on 20th July from godaddy.
But recently I saw the history of this domain name and I see was having this domain since april 2002.
I have concern because I am unable to rank this domain in search engines after so much effort and may be the person before was using some black hat seo techniques which caused the website to be penalized.
Any body have any info on this, please share.
