Hi, not sure if this is the correct place to post, but here goes.
I'm going to be launching a listing website. My following questions can be applied to a membership site as well.
I understand that in order for a listing website to be of value to an user who is searching listings, there must be a large number of listings. On the flipside, in order for a user who wishes to list something (even for free), there must be a large of eyeballs looking for items to make it worthwhile. Question is, what comes first?
How do I build the critical mass of listings so eyeballs will show up? If I was going to list private homes for sale, is there an application or service that can basically "pull" listings from an existing site real time?
Do I start small locally first? Is this model even feasible with large advertising dollars?
In general I'm interested in hearing how people have accomplished this successfully, and interested to hear how it was marketed.
