Buying dead niche sites for link juice...

Client is setting up a site in a competitive niche. He's a friend but he's ignoring my advice about getting an existing domain through auction or whatever. I did manage to find a bunch of dead Penguin food sites whilst looking for a decent expired.

Are they worth buying just to redirect to the main site? Approx 20k terrible links per site.

As far as I know, 301s don''t pass on negative link juice.

Penality will pass on your main site with 301 after few weeks. So avoid. You can find non-penalized cheap domains with some patience and godwill.

I would use those sites to build a private network supporting that main website. That is of course if they still have real page rank & indexed pages.

That'll be of little or no use, when you're buying a used domain to point to your site, you're basically looking at the links towards it. You wouldn't point bad links to your site so it wouldn't make sense to point them to your second tier

It's debatable. I've heard the "Penalty will pass on your main site with 301 after few weeks" theory and the counter "you were penalised for dupe/thin content" argument. Any experience with this? gabibewolf is probably right here. Loss of content and pagerank probably makes it worthless.

What do you guys do to overcome the "new" domain penalty?

    Don't re-direct them.

Instead, re-brand them with new content linking to the money site. They pass link juice appropriately that way. Anything above PR2 with actual pr2,3,4 back links will help them rank. Trust me on this.
