If you wanted to rank an authority site what is a good range of searches per month for your main keyword?

Bear in mind I'm trying to do SEO as cost-free as I can.

    Hey, Michael,

When doing keyword research, one should analyze search terms from a variety of perspectives, not just one point of view. It's not much use knowing a keyword's number of searches if you don't analyze the competition for it. And, of course, popular keywords usually have the strongest competition.

Also, if it's too expensive to go after a highly competitive keyword, some people try to rank for long-tail search terms, which are normally easier (as well as faster and cheaper) to rank for.

If your looking at building a authority site you should be looking at targeting low competition keywords with high search volume.

Dont rely on google for your traffic, building a relationship with your readers is what you should also be doing. They will spread the word and link to your site if it has what people are looking for.

    Hi Michael,

Your question is indeed very vague.

    First of all:

    1. An authority site will most probably have more pages than thin sites.

    2. They would have original excellent content for the searchers. (no spun content or duplicate content)

    3. You could rank your main keyword with a lots of long-tail keywords in your sub-pages or blog posts. Once you have lots of long-tail keywords ranked in first pages, your main keyword would automatically pushed upwards.

To summarize, there is no hard and fast rule on the number of searches for any site. It depends on so many things such as type of niches, product etc.

You have to make a ROI estimation on how much you are going to spend on SEO and the return of getting at the top 3 positions of Google. Again it depends on the CTR and how well your pages convert.

    Just my humble opinions.

when you think about creating authority site , you should think of 100s or 1000s of long tail keywords too. Its not just about one or two keywords and you will be surprised to see how easy is to rank and get traffic from these long tail keywords. Its more important to find a niche which fascinates you and keep you motivated to work on it, also need to be sure that there are enough ways to monetize in that niche.
