It's a debate I have been having for a little while, as I often see better SEO results from newer, fresher, simpler and less complicated websites than those are starting to get a little bit outdated. So I decided to see whether I could find anyone else who would back us up on the theory that high-quality website design leads to better and quicker SEO results.

HTML is King

I dont think quality of design has much to do about seo (Craigslist is a good example), though it has a lot to do about your visitors staying or leaving. Now the actual layout/code of a website does affect seo a lot, h1 tags position of text, how many links etc. Then there is the speed of the website, load time, that can affect things as well.

    Here is my take/opinion:

Can it directly effect SEO.. no
However there are quite a few indirect factors that a well designed website can and will effect SEO. Good example people tend to not share links with friends of crappy websites.

No, Google doesn't rank your website based on how pretty it looks. It ranks it via on and off page SEO and content.

Html is not king. Anyone saying that has no clue.
Websites are built as html default, so....?!
php, javascript, asp, etc. spits out html....

I think that mixed-up person means, "plain text."

Every big site worth a dang uses php, javascript, asp,
etc. Like the WF for example.

That person emphasizes stuff that lazy webmasters
concentrate on. It's much easier to look at non issues,
like page load time, instead of actually working on
      a GREAT site.

Cleaner code enhances crawling and page load times which gives it an edge, but not a definitive edge to other SEO factors.

If you built a 20 page site in HTML and a 20 page site in ASP.Net
The HTML site will out perform the asp.net site. More pages would be indexed as to which asp.net page files tend to kill spiders very quick., not to mention the long page loads.

      I'd say Yes to both.

A great or rather appealing design (in addition to having something useful like content for example) can contribute positively to outreach efforts.
