Ranking for multiple keywords, meta keywords don't work?

Lets say I have pie, cake and dessert as google keywords that I want to rank for. Do I need to build backlinks for each of these keyword terms to rank on each of them?

I am assuming that there is a way easier way to do this with the meta keywords tag, but I read here and it pretty much says that meta keywords dont help like they used to.

This question has been in the back of my head for some time and it's just now that I am looking for answers, so once again I'm turning to the WF for advice

So, what's the most effective way to rank for multiple keywords without having to build backlinks for each keyword term?

    First off... goto :
    https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

put in your website there.. do your desired keywords show at all? if they dont , no matter how many backlinks you create, you won't rank for them.

If your keywords are highly competitive, then yes, you will have to work hard on each keyword but usually that is not the case. ranking high for one keyword will automatically affect the stats of the other keywords too. Not as much as the focused keyword, but good enough IMO

One more thing, dont SPAM your keyword. By that i mean, dont stuff them in your article with the intention to get easily noticed by google. It does'nt work that way.

Make sure your keyword is in the location bar of that particular webpage.
    eg: yoursite.com/keyword.html

Have it in the title too..

People are not very familiar with the concept of trustrank. If your site has a high pr, you automatically gain a trustrank which will give even a new page on your site a high rank...

my point: you will rank well for most keywords automatically if google thinks your site is truly worth visiting

Just from the brief description you gave, I would say you'd be better off making each keyword a separate URL.

    domain.com/pie
    domain.com/cake
    domain.com/dessert

And then focus on that single phrase all over the page (title tag, description meta tag, H1, P, etc). Otherwise, you're diluting your keyword focus by trying to get a single page to rank for all three.

However, if pie, cake, and dessert are your actual keyword phrases, then you're not going to rank for that single word anyway... hopefully you were just using that as an example. If those were your actual keyword phrases, then you need to lower your expectations.

Generally,it's not like ranking for multiple keywords don't apply..it can if they are all nearly targeting same bigger niche market but usually it will confuse the search engine if they are apart by meaning or synonymically.
