Regarding Back linking, I have started commenting in an about.com forum. How can I tell if the signature link is getting noticed by Google? It appears to be do-follow, but how will I know if the signature is doing me any good "back-link" wise?

I agree, stay well away from blog commenting, it is the worse form of web spam and Google will penalise you for it. You need to think a relevant links at high quality, for example forums are very good for this as long as it is relevant and you provide good information to other forum members (do not spam forums). Also social bookmarks are good and you need to ensure that your website visitors are drawn in to sharing your sites content as well because this creates natural social backlinks which search engines love.

The reason is, you may not sure that that blog may or may not be spammed by tons of comments with lots of links and that blog page may become link-farm.
