Any thought on these results?

Hello,

I'm a newbie at this, but I wanted to post the results of my first attempt at building an Adsense site and see what all you veterans thought.

In February 2012, I found what I thought might be a good keyword to try and build my first site around. It was a long tail keyword with 880 exact searches per month. The average CPC was $0.68. A Google search of the keyword showed 376K results, with only about 3,000 pages when searching allintitle and allinurl. The top three sites for this search only had 10 or fewer sites linking to them.

I immediately bought the EMD with a .net extension and then went to work writing about 6-7 pages of original content. I would estimate that my longest page is near 1,000 words while the shortest may be around 300 words. After writing them, I posted about 5-7 original articles total at ezinearticles, articlesbase, and goarticles.com. Then I joined some content specific forums, created a profile with a link to my site and posted some comments. I originally started the site on Blogger, but after I bought the EMD I changed to blog to read, "This site can now be found at http-my new site.net, blah, blah. I also made a point to have some text links to sites that were HIGHER on the search results page than I was, and to link to one .gov site relevant to my keyword (which I hope gave my site relevance to Google. Whether it did or not is up for speculation.)

Up to this point, I had taken about a month to do all this. About a month later I bought a bookmarking gig on Fiverr and within two days of it, my site was showing up on the 5th page of the Google search results.

It stayed there for about another month, and then dropped out of sight. I assume this is the Google "sandbox" that everyone talks about. I actually got discouraged and just let everything go. I totally ignored it.

THEN...about 3-4 months later, I went online and searched for my site again and found it was at page 2 of Google. I never did anything else for the site, and within another month, it went to page 1 position 10, then position 4, then 2, and now it sits at position 1 for my keyword and has been there for the last two months. In October I got 244 visits and $2.54 in clicks (don't laugh, anybody. I was psyched to get this on my first attempt I adjusted my Adsense ad position, and deleted one of my two ad link units on the site, and so far in November I've gotten almost 700 hits and over $10 in clicks.

SOOO...I'm hard at work researching my next site attempt, so for those who wish to give their two cents, what is your take on what I did right or wrong? I know the money is laughable, but I knew this first site would be a learning experience. I appreciate any constructive criticism. And thanks to XFactor, wherever he is, for writing such informative posts that gave me the ammo to get started.

Now just think what you could have done with your 244 and 700 visitors if you had promoted an affiliate program, or rather your own software/service. With Adsense, you're sending away leads and possible sales. That's not worth $10 if you ask me. Rather build a list (aweber, getresponse, etc.) and focus on making REAL money.

It's a good result, and I'm surprised that a fiverr gig didn't get you penalized. But take what you've learnt and move away from Adsense, unless you're happy doing hours/weeks/months worth of work for a mere $10 a month.
