Are the names of images significantly important for SEO? What if they are hosted on a different site anyway?

In my case I have some Squidoo lenses promoting some Amazon products, and use the images directly from Amazon. Now, I'm thinking, I can create a photobucket account, and rename all the images to include keywords and link to them... but would this be worth the effort?

Every little helps (I know over optimisation exists but image names won't hurt unless your majorly keyword stuffing).

Having images drawn straight from amazon's servers rather than photobucket also sends different signals to the search engines. On photobucket the pic could be personal content. However a search engine knows that a pic sourced from a goliath retailer will 99.99% be a product.

Now we all know search engine's do not like to rank affiliate sites (they are gateways - so why not take the user to where they will eventually end up anyway). So it would be a further safeguard from making your lens look less like it has been quickly slapped together to gain a commission.

Cool, I didn't know that about search engines are ranking different results based on them thinking the site is personal vs affiliate based on the image sourcing! thanks bud.

With keywords - you're telling me if the images have too many keywords I'd be penalized (presumably because they SEs think I'm taking advantage of the SE system) but just enough is beneficial? How would I know the proper balance.

Also, If I first start with sourcing to Amazon, then later I change it to photobucket, will the SEs update their ranking/status of my page, or will they remember my affiliate status and more permanatly penalize me?
