Why is my Adsense block showing one big ad instead of three regular sized ads?

I recently put a large rectangle Adsense block on my site and have noticed recently that it populates the block with only one big text ad w/ lots of white space around it instead of the classic looking three ads. Lots of times the ads aren't even relevant to the page.

Can anyone explain this? Thank you very much.

There aren't enough people paying for advertising for that particular keyword.

If you check the Google Adwords Keyword Tool for competition, it will tell you how many people are paying to advertise for your keywords. If the competition tab is low, that means that there aren't many people spending money on that keyword.

So if a page has no Google ads (or a very small amount of them) then Google simply will not display anything. Or place Ads to Google Adsense itself, which you don't earn money for.

The key to success with adsense is picking keyword that have a high commercial intent. If there are TONS of people paying to advertise in your niche, visitors will be presented with a TON of relevant ads for their search criteria.

On the other hand, if nobody is buying ads in your niche, then Google will have nothing to display. And your visitors will have nothing to click.

    Hope that helps!

I am also seeing this on my website. I am using a 120x600 skyscraper ad and instead of showing 4 ad units, it just shows 1 big ad block. The default font size is screwed because it is showing a font size larger than the usual being displayed.

I hope this is just a glitch in Google's system and gets fixed soon as it is ruining my site's aesthetics and CTR.
