Hey,
After intensive learning about seo, (and many thanks to peeps on this forum )
i want to provide seo services as a business in the new year.

Just want to ask you guys,
1) What is a fair price to charge clients monthly on a package of say 10 keywords? I live in Toronto, Canada.
2) Do u offer promise a set of services or results?
3) Do you charge differently according to difficulty in ranking a keyword?
4) How do you mainly scout for clients?

Thanks and cheers everybody

    1) My prices generally range from $500 to $3000+/month. Very few are around $500/month though. Most are over $800/month.
    2) I offer no promises.
    3) I absolutely charge differently based on the keyword difficulty.
    4) I pick up the phone.

I hope you have spent a few years ranking websites of your own before you are going to take someone's livelihood into your hands. SEO has changed a lot this year. In the past, about the only thing you could hurt was a business's reputation. Now on top of that, you can absolutely destroy their rankings, and sometimes with it their entire business, if you do not know what you are doing.

I would say over half of the new clients I have started working with this year came to me after some "SEO" buried their business.

      1) I start at $397 a month - Start like Mike does not mean thats my average price. However thats three keywords. you have to vary keywords nowadays but I am only on the hook for three and if I rank you for one of your chosen keywords then I have fulfilled my obligation

      2) Yes I guarantee a top five ranking in 6-7 months or you get a SEO network built by me as a consolation. Rankings promised. Nothing else....results. I offer full SEO (a choice you will have to make) and business people like the focus on nothing but results. However you will encounter people with the IM SEO mindset and they want to know how many backlinks they get and want link reports. I say none. Results. what didn't you understand? Every SEO has to decide before too long whether they are a link seller or an SEO. SEOs are measured by where the site ranks and nothing else. Link sellers need to put together impressive sounding packages and sell them to as many people they can regardless of results. Plus they cater to people that want to measure results in a matter of weeks not months and who THINK they know SEO and will generally be a pain because of what they THINK SEO is about.

      3) Of course level of competition can change not only the price but the terms and the level of ranking

      4) Why should I tell any competitor? Are we family?

        So true this.

        For the others:
        1) We charge $100 for each keyword per month as a base
        2) Yes our results are guaranteed
        3) Sure

I would say that $500 is reasonable price and if you are providing quality work then any client would like to work with you.

    2) Guaranteed page 1# or money back
    3) Of course
    4) Page 2-3 for commercial keywords is full of potential clients, get a VA to scrape mails , make a decent sales mail and you're good to go

      Oh ok.

Once you've reached the goals for ranking a client,
do they pay you a retaining fee thereafter or so?

I would like to ask about your pricing and services.
    Lets say $500 / month.
You do the SEO service right?
Does it include: your paying others for some services? (Well, you know what I Mean)

    Just like so:

Client pays you for your SEO service...

You pay others for services for Clients site( LINKS, ARTICLES, ETC.)

    Am I right?

Or that $500 charge is for you alone. Then you are going to ask the client to pay for this and for that if they want too?

    Please enlighten me.

We work on a percentage of annual turnover, only targeting companies that turnover in excess of £5m/yr.

Our minimum monthly fee is £2500, and as above, that is not our average, but you can roughly work out the percentage from that. 0.6%.

As for what is fair, that is up to you and the client.

If you are perceived as an expert then you really can charge whatever you like. There is always a customer, if you have the skillset and knowledge.

We offer no promises but set key performance indicators for both ourselves and the client as targets.

I have an outbound sales team that for the most part gain introductions into the highest levels of the companies we wish to target.

    Forget Google for large clients.

    1) I don't do anything for less than $2000 a month. However I did work my way up to that and the brand I have allows me to charge that and a lot more based on the client. I usually target 5k+ and focus on corporate/company SEO

    2) My clients are usually on the first page in less than a month. With that being said I always make sure my clients pay enough so that I have the budget to get these results

I make results guarantees to clients, HOWEVER I also don't take on clients who want the impossible done nor do I take on idiots who are waiting with their hand on a refund button.

In short...You SHOULD be good enough to make promises if your going to take someones money, however make sure you are taking money from the right people

    3) I charge based on how much I think it will make the client and how much I think they have

    4) I have a pretty large SEO brand/website that makes getting clients as easy as saying "we are taking new clients now"

Having brand and people already invested in you is the best way to get high paying clients in the world

    With that being said
Please make sure you know what you are doing and can get results for yourself before doing it for others. SEO firms are getting wrecked right now because Google has evolved and they had no clue what they were doing in the first place.

If you can't get yourself to $50 bucks a day, or don't think you can take on competitive keywords, you need to develop the skill set first

So, for one client, how many hours do you typically put in per day. Could you imagine just putting in a couple hours in each day for four clients charging them $2,000 a month and then outsourcing your work to a VA? You could early make $6,500 a month passively.

I find it ridiculously difficult to pitch people prices even when I give lowball offers. I don't know how you guys find clients that pay $2,000 per month.

Always give 3-4 option to clients. Starting from $700 is good. Mention types of services which you can provide.

Yeah, have the most basic to the most advanced. I wonder if most SEO specialists in the US actually do their own SEO work or just outsource. I know for the longest time, I was basically just the middle man for my client in my outsourced employees. Luckily the mass public doesn't catch on or most of us would be with out jobs.

No, I typically do Video production and it is very labor intensive and I could never get someone to hire me for more than $2,000 a video. And that could be 3-4 days of intense labor, but I know other companies with way worse portfolios, and terrible websites who were getting clients to pay 10,000 for a video.

    I don't get it.

    Hi,
thanks for the replies... just wanted to know... once you attain the anticipated results for clients.... what fee do you charge them after? Do you keep them with retaining fees? How long do you typically keep a client for?

      Don't promise them "anticipated results".

SEO is a marketing strategy that shouldn't stop just because the client reaches some arbitrary place in the SERPs.

Keep giving them more traffic every month and they'll keep paying (as they should...you're making them money!).

    1) I charge $800/month at the very bare minimum. Anything less and a) it's hard to put the resources needed to rank in 2012 and b) it's not worth getting to all of their questions and comments.
    2) I promise more traffic. Otherwise what are they paying me for?
    3) I do...to a point. It's usually better to get them to change to better keywords (if the client doesn't know SEO then they definitely don't know keyword research).
    4) Get one client, deliver for them, and you'll never have to worry about finding clients again.

    1) What is a fair price to charge clients monthly on a package of say 10 keywords? I live in Toronto, Canada.
No matter where you live, it is important where do your clients live you can't charge the same price for "New York lawyer" and "some-small-city-in-Nebraska lawyer"
Depends on the city and difficult fo keyword rankings I would charge somewhere around $497 up to $1000. Maybe even more. you need to "feel" your client.

    2) Do u offer promise a set of services or results?
Set of services, yes. I can guarantee the number of backlinks, but I rather don't do that. Instead of that, I teach my clients SEO basics, so they know what to expect. I explain them SEO is a long term process and because of the often Google updates I can't guarantee rankings, but at the same time, I am also teaching them "quality over quantity" model. It is better have 5 guest posts on high PR blogs with backlinks pointed to their website, than have hundreds if not thousands spammy backlinks which can also harm their website rankings in a long term.
I am mainly focused on a highly targeted visitors in my SEO campaign, which means my clients are more satisfied with 500 targeted visits per month but great conversions, rather than having a campaign with 50.000 visits but no conversions.
    3) Do you charge differently according to difficulty in ranking a keyword?
Somehow yes. I can promise them number of a backlinks for a particular package they choose, but I advice them from the very start if the package is appropriate for keywords they wish to rank. I mean, you can't expect to rank brand new lawyer's blog in a few months (even a year or more) for "New York lawyer" or a similar phrases for 800-1000$/ month. Heck you can't rank them for "Lawyer Queens" phrase for that money.
SEO can be very expensive if we are talking about serious business.
    4) How do you mainly scout for clients?
It seems no one wants to reveal you a secret
There is no big secret, really. Like someone said, page 2-page 5 are very good for prospecting the clients. Local business directories, too. You need to write a killing sales email or hire some professional to do that. Also, it is good if you include your skype contact, physical address and phone number. That gives more credibility to your business.
