What keyword software can't tell you

Judging by the sites in the serps I can see that most marketers don't know anything about there niche. I mean most times it seems as if they totally relied on keyword software for information and nothing else.

My advice is to you is do one of two things, make sites based on topics you know about or if your going to just pick a niche based on some low competition keywords you found in Google keyword tool, at least do your homework on that niche. Research, visit forums, yahoo answers, check Facebook to see if there's a fan page about your topic, than find out what people are saying about it.

In the past and even now I've made sites in the medical niche, I'm not a medical student and don't aspire to be, but over the last two yrs I learned a great deal about the problems and issues in my niche, through research and most of all my analytic reports.

But none of that can compare to making a site based on a topic that I am very knowledgeable on, you would have a great advantage over your competition.

For example, the bodybuilding niche is something near and dear to my heart lol. I read articles all the time on the subject that never addresses most of the problems I faced while working out.

Ex: Eating 6 times a day can be very expensive, especially if you have a family to care for (wife+kids) buying food for them and separate (healthy food) for yourself will cost hundreds of dollars. My personal solution to this was to by grits for my carbs, you get 81 servings per container and each serving has 29 carbs. Grits cost 3.99.

Also every bodybuilding site says to drink plenty of water, but don't tell you how to deal with going to the bathroom every 20 minutes. My point is no keyword software can make up for experience.

So I stop using keyword software a long time ago even for niches I know nothing about, I just find out everything there is to know about a niche (as much as research will tell me anyways) and buy content based on my findings.

Plus keyword software brings up the same oh long tails, when in reality once you make a site you will find plenty of keywords that get a good search amount that can't be found in any keyword tool.

Ask anyone with a old/large site and they will back up that statement.

These keyword software should be used as a hint for the future. If anyone remembers Yahoo keyword tool (overture) was easily manipulated if someone did repeated searches for a particular keyword. So lets say you or your associates started doing fake searches for keyword ABC, the no of searches would be easily raised.

This is just wrong, lets say I am great in finance niche, how many bigger keywords are there that I could rank with little to 0 knowledge. Whats the difference if you pick good keyword with conversion of 6% and 1% ? I think I would rather read or higher good content writers and wont cheap out on this one and have these articles rated for A++. I have sites ranked in niches that I have 0 knowledge, just because content is amazing and I have out sourced it,social value signals and user comments are exploding true the roof. Picking a keyword is like picking a fight. Why do you think theres a weight class in boxing ? Just for the heck of it ? No offense but you should not make statements like that.

Using GKT does not indicate correct competition, neither it indicates correct amount of traffic. I believe you have never used serpiq. Their data 95% of the time is correct,I just double check to make sure everything is the way it looks.

I don't understand most of what you said. But if I had a choice of reading a medical blog written by you, or one by a doctor. I'd chose the one written by a doctor and I'm sure most people would.

The reason being is he has actual experience, he knows about what exams you should prepare for, how to properly diagnose a patient, how much he has to pay for school loans, how much is medical insurance going to be for a private practice etc.

The best you could do is research all of that, but it is not that same has having first hand knowledge. My point once again is why would the doctor need keyword software to tell him what he already knows.

Even if the doctor wrote naturally he would incorporate tons of keywords just because it would be impossible for a doctor not to use medical terms in his writing.

Edit: I never said anything about using the Google keyword tool to determine competition, competition in GKT is for adwords not serps. The only thing I would use keyword software for is to see how many searches a keyword gets. Even than you could skip it in some cases, I don't have to look at any keyword software to tell me "car insurance" get's a ton of searches, and yes I know it's highly competitive, it's only a example people.

    Hi Nest,

Been reading your posts for some time. Love all of the info you put out there for people like me new to Internet marketing.

Could you please explain what you mean about buying content?

    Thanks.

I never come here anymore except to ask Yukon questions lol, you just happen to catch me. I buy content at The Content Authority. Just tell the writer what kind of article you want and place your order. If there are any problems it can be revised for free. Best of luck.

I drink 4 liters of water a day and there is nothing safe you can take to stop yourself from pissing.

You were just making a point right?

Because I must have read at least 30 nutrition books in my life and only know of one class of drugs that can slow down pissing. And these are drugs most people would want to stay away from (opiates).

If you know of something better, please do tell. =]

    Nice post OP.

Keyword software doesnt really tell you stuff. For example, say you search for "personal development courses". The tool will spit out a load of phrases related to personal development.

It wont give you the stuff people are really searching, for example:

    - Book names/course names.
    - Product authors/popular people in the niche.
    - Questions people are asking within the niche.

My advice, basically follow my strategy here for keyword selection: The Ultimate Guide To Keyword Selection!
