Which is More Likely to Rank in Google Images?

... my "featured image" for my post or an image which I simply insert into the post (albeit near the top)?

I ask because I'm never sure as I go to create a new post and I have the image I want to rank for (and is also titled as) my targeted keyword, I don't know if I should put it as the featured, in the post, or both?

    Most of the time the image in the post ranks above than the featured one, if the keywords is in the POST.

    But if the keywords is in the LINK to the image and in its ALT attribute than any of the two can rank.

    You would be surprised on why some images rank and others do not. For instance SEOMoz put together a little experiment where an image that had keywords in alt attribute and file name ranked below those that had good on-page optimization that traditionally relates to the website.
