How to make a profitable site (I think)

Hey all,

I've been reading and studying, and I think I have the general gist of how to get a site going in the most efficient and profitable manner possible. I want to bullet point what I am thinking and would appreciate any expert opinions for or against my knowledge.

1. Keyword research is the most vital step. Criteria for keyword selection depends on competition, exact searches, and CPC. Also depends on the number of high PR pages on page 1 of Google for the keyword(s) in question.

2. An exact match domain is a good idea.

3. Content comes next. Good quality, informative, valuable content. If content is king, good keywords must be the king's knights of the round table. Fresh content at regular intervals is a must.

4. After you've run out of content to write about, then start building backlinks. Backlinks to high PR sites are the single best type of backlink to get (although it seems open for debate the best way to obtain these backlinks). Social bookmarking and aged domain buying with new links to your site are also good ideas, and with all links obtained, anchor text variations are necessary.

5. Keep doing #3 and #4 until you've either worn out your fingers or gotten the results you wanted.

Is this a pretty clear summation of how it's done?

I forgot; I'm in the process of trying to build my next site. My first one sits at position 3 for my keyword, has a CTR of about 5-6% but doesn't make much money because the CPC is tiny. This was just my first try with getting the hang of the methods involved. All total, I created about 10 backlinks myself and bought the other couple hundred. I don't want to buy any more if I can help it after listening to the horror stories in here.

I plan to put much more time and effort into my next site. I've gotten a good bunch of keywords to start, bought the domain, and I'm about to start making content. I wouldn't even be this far if it weren't for the awesome advice and hilarious comments in this place. Thanks, everyone.

You have the right idea and this or a variation of this method is probably how everyone gets started creating niche sites.

After the recent changes made with Google's search algorithm, I've been playing around with making really cool/unusual sites that are just interesting ... targeting a specific niche. Sites that don't rely on SEO but just getting traffic from sharing. I don't know the right word to describe it... but you wouldn't tell your friends "hey check out this site with this great information on how to sew a scarf!" You wouldn't get a million visitors a year from that.

Maybe more along the lines of ... "hey check out this site where you can input your name and it tells you exactly how many times you'll get married in your life!" That may not get a million visitors either, but it's just an example.

I don't know ... just a thought for those still chasing after "how to become an electrician" type keywords and not seeing any real results.

I personally think that information sites are becoming unprofitable. For example, maybe in the past you could rank for 'how to' keywords just by varying the keywords a bit so as not to compete with the major sites like Wiki or eHow, etc. Now, it seems that results for those long tail keywords are outputting the large authority sites either way.
