301 Redirect and Canonical URL Problem!

Hi there. I'm working on a client site which has over 3,000 pages indexed on Google.

Recently this site went through a major redesign and architectural fix. The URL structure changed and so did the layout and design of the site.

What we did is we performed a 301 redirect of the old URLs (indexed on Google) towards to the new URLs (just launched) so that we can preserve our Google rankings for those landing pages.

The problem though, is that the site was created in Magento (all pages have an https and http version). The old URLs are in "https". Originally we 301 redirected the https to "http" landing pages....but Magento still shows the default "https" version even after the 301 redirection.

The solution I endorsed to the client is to implement URL canonicalization on the https pages, so that the preferred URL is "http".

I'm not sure if this will solve the problem though! I know it will solve the duplicate content issue, but I'm not sure if my SEO rankings will suffer.

The new site just launched yesterday.

Looking for an SEO expert to answer this query. Thanks!

Does the new site still display with "https"? If so, leave it. https is more secure (obviously) than "http".

As for the rankings, it'll be normal to fluctuate a bit in the early stages. Whether it falls or rises in rank depends on the speed of the redirect, landing pages and overall loading speed/stability of the new site.

I dont think you will have any problem with https. It is really good and secure. If you have done proper redirects den it would just be fine...

Canonical redirects transfer the pagerank and link value as well as sorting duplicate content issues. Your solution will work to keep as much of the original ranking power as possible.
