Press release sites aren't 'quality backlinks' -- but then you also consider blog comments to be quality, so I guess I'm wasting my time.

PR Sites pass little to no value. Yes even PRweb. Just about all of them got hit upside the head by Panda, and many have gotten their ability to pass link juice manually turned off.

They are still useful, but only because of reach and visibility. You aren't going to get that with the free and cheap ones. The few that can do that (PRWEB, prnewswire, etc) can help you get your message out, but the automated links they generate on the PR sites themselves and their "distribution partners" are next to useless. In addition, they can very well get you in trouble if you try to stuff anchor text in there.

So if you have something newsworthy to publish, then yes give it a shot. That way it stands a good chance of getting picked up by a real journalist, publisher or blogger and they contact you/write about you or your product. That's where the quality links come in.

Exactly what retsek said. Press releases as a source of SEO Value? No more, be it PRweb
Want to get some instant traction or some online buzz, get a premium press release done.
    Nothing Else

Got a message asking How do i know prweb and it's distributors don't pass link juice.

I've doing at least two press releases a month with PRWEB for quite a while now. So based on that, common sense and this discussion from 2005: ( people still believe the rules of SEO are always changing? )

a legit press release can get you written up by reporters, or editors/sites may subsequently choose to link to your site. But the actual content of the press release itself doesn't directly affect a site. For example, on http: /www.prweb.com/releases/2005/10/prweb296086.php those hyperlinks don't help avatarfinancial.com (in Google).

Press releases are nearly a throwback to an older time period — they follow a moderately standard format and have been used for over a century to announce new developments to newspapers and other news media.

Perhaps it’s this semiformal nature of the press release that makes many small businesses overlook it when planning ways of promoting themselves. But, press releases are not just for large, national companies.

Press releases are a great source of links (when links are included in them). The websites that host press releases can be worthwhile for link weight, and newspapers or other news sites may sometimes publish the entire release as well. In the past, this near-instant PageRank value conveyed by issuing PR was considered very worthwhile.

But incorporating press releases into your marketing mix includes other compelling reasons that go beyond the value of links you might get. (And, as Google and Bing have become more sophisticated, it could be that press releases are no longer high-quality sources for links, and some sites may be “nofollowing” links in press releases when redisplaying them, negating their link value.)

Press releases are a promotional vehicle that can help you gain more attention for your company. When done effectively, they help you attract attention you might then be able to translate into more customers and sales.

Releases can still function in the classic way, by getting the interest of a local newspaper reporter, who could then choose to do a story about your company for his or her publication. In this day and age, press releases can also get paraphrased or reported on by bloggers, too – I’ve had press releases picked up by specialized industry blogs, bringing attention to my topic from communities interested in the subject matter.
