Keys to a Long Lasting Link Strategy (make money for years and years)

So I hear so much around here about profile links, article spinning, and automated blog commenting, and I am convinced these are absolutely the best way to have a short lived SEO strategy for site. I saw a guy ready to throw in the towel today. It's very frustrating that people here so much of this stuff that they spend hours and hours only to see their site penalized.

I've got 10+ year old sites and over 100 domains and have only seen a couple of minor penalties over more than a decade. But it seems people don't really care about long lasting strategies that will give them money for years.

I'm ranting...

But tell me I'm not the only one that hates to see this or the only one that would like to see more reasonable business plans being presented that offer income for years and years to come.

  • Dvduval,

I agree with you that there are many website owners out there that are only thinking about the short term. They have a vulture-like mentality where they build a website for no other reason than to get traffic to it and monetize it with ads. Some of the tactics you mentioned or simply purchasing backlinks are good ways to get a site to rank fast but not a good long term option and also create poor user experiences.

A better long term option is to slowly build contextual backlinks that actually help users and promote a website in a positive way. I have seen business owners serious about their web presence are taking this approach so there are those out there that care. Unfortunately there are small subsets of people that make a bad name for the rest of us.

SEOMoz has a pretty good link building strategy,

I would go so far as to say that many people are "taught" that a short term mentality will work, but the odds are stacked against them so much more. People tell them what they want to hear and often don't know a better resource where they can get a second opinion.

I agree with you. If we want something of a 'shortcut,' then don't expect that the strategy will last long or will bring you great benefits for long term. I still believe in the saying 'slowly but surely!'

Autoblogging, blog commenting and forum profile links are very poor linking strategies (as you said).

Very few people realize that blog commenting and forum links are pretty dead to say the least, no wonder people are giving up, they're getting information from people who know just as little about SEO as they do.

I recently mentioned this in a forum that is named after a dark colored hat, and these people were absolutely vehement that I was wrong and the strategy works. Obviously, they just wanted to sell their products, but the same thing is going on here!

You know what the problem is?

These tactics do work for the short-term. So people go and look at SERPs and then check the backlinks. What do they find? This type of stuff winning.

Of course that site might get dumped later but for that moment it's number one. So people imitate it.

Google is sort of to blame for not being able to stop old school tactics.

Increasingly, I am not seeing those short term tactics really working much anymore. I see lots of claims that is works, but then nobody is ready to offer up a real site that is actually doing well right now using the tactic.
