Amazon Affiliates - $25 cap off?

Hey, I was wondering is $25 the most you can make over an item? I noticed that someone had bought an item for $2,500 and I got $25 off of it. I know damn sure that's not 4 percent (referral rate from the start and it goes up) of $2,500.

Or does it just depend on the item?

    Was it an electronic item?

I can't imagine anyone in 2012 spending $2500 on one electronic item,
but I know electronics like PCs, laptops, etc. on amazon are capped at $25.

Was the link a direct link? If so, it may be more prudent to advertise
less expensive electronics, but $25 is not bad for one item.

You can't see someone buying a nice shiny new Macbook Pro?

i see no reason why there should be a cap on your commissions.. it would simply deter people from promoting anything over X amount.. in which case it's about $650

Yeah if that's the case, I'll just go for $600 products.

Edit: It's definitely the electronics market. F this market. I'm going for somewhere else. Cause not only does it cap off, but EVERYONE goes for the electronics niche. On top of that, even if our referral rate goes up it still stays at 4 percent. Poop.

I know of my products if someone comes into Amazon through my link but then ventures off and buys a book on something like "How to do well after Prison" my commission by much less on item because it wasn't a direct link.

I'm out of that biz now so my product was dog ramps. How that person ended up on that book is beyond me.

Haha...but I thought that I'd share since some of my payouts are smaller.

You get a reduction in comission if its not a direct link purchase???

As you've figured out, stay away from electronics. You'll also notice a MUCH higher rate of returned merchandise there as well.

There's such a diverse selection of products on Amazon, get creative, and specialize.

Lesson learned from this damn forum. Don't spill the beans (learned the hard way). Everyone and their dogs, cats, mommas, daddas, boyfriend, girlfriend will copy the same exact strategy that you do. Soon enough you go on Google and you see 10325892359328 other sites that are the same exact as yours. Same theme, content, everything. And then the competition gets crazier, and then Google will see how shitty these sites are. Good game folks. Good game.

This is why successful people don't give specifics.

I've heard of this happening a lot: Someone sells a successful niche website on Flippa or elsewhere (complete with details of traffic and profitability), and overnight 20 copies of the same website pop up.

I think there are people who make their living just making copies of others' websites. I've personally seen a successful friend of mine get her entire website copied by someone who paraphrased literally every sentence of every article. The site got to the 2nd page of Google for a very competitive term before my friend got it removed for copyright violations.

Recently Amazon changed office supplies to a capped 4% also even though that isn't an electronics category. There was discussion about it on the Amazon forum. It doesn't look good for affiliates, it seems they are changing more categories to lower %.

Are there any good alternatives to Amazon for promoting electronics which don't have a cap? How about CJ? Although the conversion rate isn't as good as Amazon, they have a longer cookie period plus maybe no commision cap so it might be a better option for electronics.

Not sure bro. I think I'm just at the verge to sell myself. That sounds wrong by all means. Let me rephrase that. Brand my name lol. Offer one on one coaching etc.

Maybe it was a used version of the product or a third party seller selling at a discount?
There is no cap on Amazon.com products as far as I'm aware I've sold a number of 3d TV's where I get a $50+ commission.
I don't agree with the comments regarding electronics, TV's are great for selling multiple products, a fair few buyers purchase the TV, a stand and the warranty, sometimes home theaters and DVD players as well.

I agree that TV's are great, etc. etc. But what I'm saying is that it's starting to become saturated.

I would rather get into something where not a lot of people are tapped into that niche/market and profit from there.

Amazon has caps on a few things. I said electronics, but was
talking about PC-related--tablets, laptops, desktops, etc. Those are
      capped at $25.

I don't think it is easier to sell a $650 item than a $2500 item,
or $650 non computer stuff as opposed to one $2500 computer.

This is a cap, not a minimum. So a $400 computer, at just one item
      overall, would be $16.

$25, one sale, is actually not bad.

GGpaul: This is weird, I recently sold an electronics product and my commission over this product was well over 25 dollars. There must be something wrong here, and I would guess your customer bought second hand or from a third party maybe?. Did you try to contact amazon and ask for an explanation? Thats what I do in these cases.

If you are an Amazon affiliate, it is important that you become familiar with the commission structure first besides knowing the TOS.

Here is the link to the Compensation Overview:

    https://affiliate-program.amazon.com...pensation.html

...and here is the clause which states the cap of $25:

"Caps: Personal computers (including without limitation desktops, laptops, notebooks, tablets, and netbooks) have advertising fees capped at $25, and Amazon Instant Video as well as Amazon MP3 products are capped at $1.50 per item."

At the end of the day, $25 is better than nothing. I was just curious. I won't dwell on it. I'll just stay on the grind.

      Thanks for the info though.
