For some reason my pagerank on my site is 0. You can see the site here:

Elite Makeup Designs | Los Angeles Makeup Artist

My wordpress site has been around for about 10 months now. I have 47 backlinks (i know that is not a lot- working on that), and 26 individual posts. Most of those posts are picture-based (i am a makeup artist), and i'm workiing on adding some depth to them.

I'm working on putting out a new post every day, and will be releasing a "How-To" pretty soon that I'll pay to promote to get some backlnks... My thought though is that by now I'd be better off than Page Rank 0.

Any thoughts? Any help is very much appreciated.

I would suggest you to built more backlinks gradually.Make sure the you have the appropriate title and keyword for your blogs. You can perform image optimization for the images you post regularly by using the keywords in the alt tags.

Thanks! Should the keywords in the alt tag be the keyword I'm targetting? Does that get spammy if for example I make all of the alt tags "makeup artist"? Will I get docked for that?

The only thing that impacts PR is backlinks. Doesn't matter how often you post. It's all about backlinks. You get links on pages with PR pointing to your site and you will see the PR rise in the next update or two.

OK thanks. I've read a lot about backlinks. Couple questions regarding getting them:

Can you suggest some places where I can submit my posts to generate backlinks?

When commenting on other blogs related to my niche, what must i keep in mind? I know that the page i'm posting on's PR is a factor- what about what i'm actually commenting w/? Is the content of my comment critical?

Personally, when I am doing SEO work for my clients I avoid blog comments. You never know when a webmaster might abandon their website or get tired of moderating comments. Then comments about viagra, and porn, and gambling start getting through on the same page as your comment.

I might be overly cautious. Plenty of other people do blog commenting. I always thought it looked kind of spammy for a real business too.

As far as linking, it sounds like your are working in your local market only. You should make sure your business is in Google+ for business and local directories like Yelp, MerchantCircle, Localeze, iBegin, Foursquare, etc. Make sure your address is on the site and enter the address the same way in those directories. For example if you abbreviate avenue as "Ave." on your site, do it the same way in the directories.

For local rankings, Google uses citations as well as links. Citations are an occurrence of a NAP. Name of the business, Address of the business, Phone number of the business. That's why these directories work so well.

        That's where I would start.

Your pagerank shows 0 because the publicly viewable pagerank only gets updated every few months. Meaning, from all your linkbuilding activity you might already have a PR 2 domain but it won't show that (in the toolbar you're probably using to display the PR) until the next PR update.

Thank you very much. If my PR rank is in fact up after the next PR update, will that have any effect on search?

              No.

Your PR is constantly being updated. The toolbar is only updated a few times a year though.

PageRank is Google's non keyword specific indicator of a webpage's authority. The HomePage PageRank of the website, IMHO, is the best indication available to us on the website's authority.
The combination of the webpage and website authorities have major influence on the pages positioning on Google. Google also gives a boost to the HomePage PageRank when it is competing for a keyword.
Google hides a great deal from us. The PageRank information we see is several weeks out of date even on the day of an update. We are given the information in integers 0, 1, 2 etc whereas Google uses an unknown number of decimals. Your website HomePage may have a PageRank of 0.999 or even 2.44 but you will not know this for a few months.
The important thing is to beaver away at producing great content for link bait and going for legitimate link building.
                Good luck

                David

Ideally you need to get backlinks from sites similar to yours. Therefore, blog on your site about the topic and other sites in your niche will republish your blog posts with a link back to your site. This is one way to get traffic/backlinks.

Mike, we are a car dealer exporter with branches in Thailand, Australia, Dubai, UK, Japan, Singapore and US. Can we promote our local branches in the same fashion. Do the sites you mention have localized directories outside the United States.

I thought that if you had a zero that Google had not indexed your site yet. But your site has been around for five years. Can you still get a zero for using black-hat SEO techniques that Google doesn't like? It was that way in the past.

But if you only have a few links and they're not spam or farming sites, should that even matter to you if the site is appearing in multiple front page rankings?

page rank is a crude measure of trust. trust only comes from other sites. SO you need more links period. Blogging isnt going to do it.
