You would be better off using jump-links like Wikipedia does, example:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile#Alternatives_to_the_automobile

Notice the # & the extra text at the end of the regular URL.

I'm not sure If you know about jump-links but they can potentially get you extra links in your ranked SERP description.

This works best for lengthy articles.

I did not know the potential extra links in SERPs though, thanks for that.

Here's an example, I kinda cheated on the search phrase only because I didn't want to take the time to search for a better example, lol.

In the screenshot below, that extra hyperlink (future car technologies) in the Wikipedia SERP description is caused by a jump-link. It doesn't matter that the example is Wikipedia, anyone can use the same technique on their own site/s.

Pretty sure search engines ignore links on pages pointing to themselves. This happens all the time, it's nothing to lose sleep over.

This is true, however internal linking is vital for rankings. Make sure you link your pages together properly.

  • Redwater,

If you are talking about linking to another portion of a page, this is a best practice for a good user experience but not much else. If the link just refreshes the page that really makes no sense to have it there in the first place.
Here is a tutorial on how to link to another portion of a page,

Internal Linking contributes very well for ranking your site. Also linking must be done properly which is the most important thing and the links must not be broken.

I don't need much internal linking now. The days are gone.
