Can someone pleeeeeease tell me what is all this backlink business?

I've ignored them pretty much completely, mostly because I just can't figure out what you're supposed to do with them. I've done tons of reading, tons of research and the best system seems to be something like Pat Flynn's backlinking strategy.

What I've gotten so far about the best way to do this is (pls correct me if I'm wrong):
1. Write original, high quality content for my main site (done.)
2. Create a handful of Web 2.0 properties (blogs on WP, Blogger, Tumblr, Livejournal, etc) and make contextual links from there back to my main site (kind of done)
3. Create a handful of accounts on top article marketing directories and post content with contextual links back to my site (kind of done)
4. Make social media profiles with link back to my site and to drive traffic back to the site (kind of done, work in progress)
5. Spin a gazillion articles and post them on various article directories and Web 2.0 properties with contextual links leading back to #2 and #3 but NOT #1.

Oh, and you're also supposed to:
1. Guest post on related blogs and sites (not even tried)
2. Comment on related blogs and sites (kind of tried, no successfully)

Are you guys actually doing this? I've tried to implement this system a few times and it just took sooooo long. I don't mind the work, but it is so very tedious and I don't even know if it works.

If you have done this - what is the point? Do you get to use those same networks over and over again for every site you create? Is this beneficial to your SERPs? Won't Google find out about this eventually?

So many questions...anyone have answers?
