Is it time to change my SEO strategy ?

Hey Warriors,

I've been member for a while buts mostly as a reader, this is actually my first thread. I've been doing link building for over 3 years and I was very successful promoting any niche and get great rankings on page 1 until the Panda/Penguin updates.
Since then my products are still working but they are definitely not as effective as before.
I know I should start looking at social media which is in my near future plans but I believe that if I change a little bit the way I do link building now it might help.

So far I've been link building every month to promote a website, same amount of links each month and it was working ok but now its not that great anymore.
I was thinking to do the following:

1. Change the link diversity and include more generic phrases (like click here) and also promote the URLs.
2. Spread the submission over several months instead of doing all together on 1 month.
3. Promote different sub-pages or even different URLs on the same niche rather than sending all links to 1 page.

Do you think that will help me or is there anything else I should be doing ?
Let me know, thanks.

Regards,

Flojomtl

  • Flojomtl,

The things you mentioned would definitely be in your best interest. You want to work hard to not leave a footprint. If you have 50 backlinks pointing at your site all with the same anchor text, this is a red flag that you are manipulating search results. Vary your anchor text, do a slow and steady link building campaign, look for sites that are similar to yours or complementary, and above all else just make your activity look natural. Technically Google does not like any sort of link building but if you make it look like it is happening naturally, they really won’t be able to tell the difference.

You might be able to find some ideas in this thread about how to not leave a footprint,

    hope that helps,

  • Yes all good ideas. Beside diversifying anchor text and sending the naked urls also add a mix of no-follow and do-follow links. If you only have do-follow links then that is also a signal of unnatural links. Also diversify source of your links. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

So you're saying that you create a website, blog, what have you and just do link building for one month?

        Connorbringas,

I normally do a combination of links such as web2.0 sites, profile forums, article directories and blog comments. I've been doing that every month for several months and I was getting to page 1 but since Panda/Penguin updates I have to double my efforts and I'm stuck at page 3. I think I would get to page 1 if I would continue for more months but that also means more cost that I cannot always afford that.

But as everyone else is suggesting I should add more link diversity and make it look more natural. I'm thinking on spreading these same links but let's say over 6 months instead of doing everything on 1 month.

This is what I totally agree with. Putting naked url makes your post looks more natural. Also it is important to build nofollow links to keep a balance. Also changing anchor text is very important.

      Hi Toyota Hilux Dealer,

I actually do use do-follow and no-follow (mostly do-follow though) but I think you mentioned something crucial. Not putting all my eggs in one basket, I will create different products so that if ever Google decides not to rank my sites using 1 technique, at least I'll have others to keep trying. Thank you so much !

All good ideas. Especially the first one. your weaker links should have a good mix of generic terms but you can also jsut do different variations of your primary longtails as well

      agapril07,

Right I think I'll start going after long-tail keywords as it will be faster and easier to rank for those.
      Thanks !

changing anchor text as you mention, is very important.

using the same link frequency will hurt your site, spread link submission over several months instead of one single month is better.

get links to different pages, that's also a good strategy.

      zaccks,

I agree, I think Link Frequency is my main issue. I believe if I spread my link building over months it will look more natural. Comments like yours make me believe my hunch is right

Thanks a lot for your comments !

I've been thinking the same thing.

I recently started accepting guest posts, and what i've noticed is that very high PR sites (like 6) tend to send me articles with links to articles and not home page.

For example, if they put a new recipe on their site, their guest post will link to the recipe.

Lower PR sites, send me articles to the home page.

    Just food for thought

      Hi denutza,

That's interesting. I think sending links to sub-pages (like the recipe page) looks more natural than sending links to the home page. If high PR sites are doing this it might mean this is the right away to do it.

      Hi engagedotscrm,

I agree with you, our strategies need to keep up to date with Google updates. Its a constant change we need to follow. The problem is how do we know what is working and what is not after each algo update ? I'm afraid to experiment and end up harming my site.

I think after Google penguin and panda update, the work has increased. Now you have to think not only on keywords but brand name, website urls etc.So you have to implement all techniques in a way so you all work be balanced and natural.
So now,Its upon you how do you start?I think you are going well with your planning but might be some improvement can help more better.

Diluting your anchor text will definitely help, and it can be much easier to rank internal pages for specific keyword phrases than the main site.

For example if my main site keyword is "best widgets" and I have an internal page called "best blue widgets under $100" then it's much easier to rank that page for "best blue widgets under $100" than trying to rank the main page for it.

Watch out for keyword density as well. I've noticed Google is a lot less forgiving of unnatural H tags now. My on-page SEO has changed radically since Penguin and Panda 20. Pay much more attention to LSI keywords and make sure your H tags look natural.

The other thing that's really important now, which you did touch on in your opening post, was social media. Google is relying MUCH more heavily now on social signals when ranking sites. Give your visitors some kind of incentive to tweet, facebook share, stumble, digg etc your pages. It doesn't just help with rank, it also gets you more direct traffic on your content.

      Hi Karen Barr,

Your comments are great, I agree with everything you say.
I will definitely put more attention to my on page and I have to start looking at social media. I'll put that on my things to do before the end of the year.

I believe if I diversify anchor text, use do-follow & no-follow, use variations, link to sub-pages improve my link frequency, on page issues and start being active on social I'll have a win-win.

      Thanks so much.
