Which are currently the best tools for Keyword-research?

Is Market Samurai still the best?
Should I invest in purchasing Market Samurai, or are there currently some free tool that is equally good, or some other non-free product that is better?

Google Adwords Keyword tool is the best when it comes to keyword research. Why go for anything else when you can have something Google has already provided.

A great tool all around is Traffic Travis. There is a free portion and the paid portion is so you can download to your pc as a pdf or excel. So lots of info like Market Samurai.

I've used MS in the past, but find it a bit unwieldy. These days I use Stealth Keyword Competition Analyzer and/or Keyword Anchor. Neither of these are free but worth the money, I reckon. They each analyze the data differently.

These looks good and decently priced. Thanks!

By the way... are there any tutorials on how to get the most out of Google Adwords Tool?
I'm going to be doing the keyword-research mostly for choosing my domain-names.

That's debatable. I don't know anyone of PPC expertise who relies on the keyword tool for anything of real substance.

It's good for finding negative keywords. And that's mostly it.

i use the google keyword tool. there might be better tools out there, but the google one provides me enough for what I need.
I've said before that a person should implement good SEO on their website as well as in doing backlinks and such, but I wouldn't obsess over it.
What's more important is to create value for the visitor, customer... so regardless of what Google does to its' search algorithims, your site will still grow whether you are in the top 10 or not.

Market Samurai is now depending on yahoo or bing database not on google so i dont think so its worth buying but you can try google tool which is free and will give you lot of info.

There are many parameters which you should know before you choose the keyword which google tool do not provide so if you are really interested to rank well and quickly then you need the right tool...

    Good Luck!

For all those parroting that Google Adwords Keyword Tool is the best, you need to keep in mind there are two broad parts to keyword research:

    1. Finding keywords with a suitable search volume

    2. Determining how strong the competition is for those keywords.

GAKT is fine for the first part, but is next to useless for the second (and my opinion) the most important part of keyword research.

Agreed. There is a lot of data that obviously isn't taken into account by GAKT. The research of that information may be done manually, but it will take some time -- which is obviously the advantage of using software.

No one has yet mentioned Micro Niche Finder. I last used it about a year ago, but at that time I found that it would pull in longer tail keywords than MS, and simpler, more immediately digestible data.

The thing with Market Samurai is that it is a swiss army knife of KW research, when you might only need to collect some basic information. You might not need most of what MS does.

True enough but after an extensive testing of software out there I was surprised to find nothing out there that beat Google adwords and installing Seoquake. I wasn't looking for a free tool and was willing to clunk down the cash but almost nothing out there gave me anything over going to the first page seeing the title targeted, the PR and whatever snippets.

Unfortunately almost all the software out there has some metric that is worthless or that requires you to click each individual keyword to pull up data similar to SEOquake. If I have to do that then why not just use Seoquake and also see the first page itself? Such factors as Google places and the presence of Google products can make a big difference in organic conversions. For going through multiple keywords Stealth Keyword Competition Analyzer was one of the best I saw although I can't figure out why the programmer won't put something as basic as copy and paste in the program (it reads CSVs only)
